Do states enforce laws on lifts?

Recommended Posts

So I live in CT and the laws of my state is that you can't exceed 4 inches for your lift. I want to get a BDS lift and their is very little price difference between a 4 inch and 6 inch and I'll already be at that point unable to get into most parking garages.

So I am wondering what kind of trouble could I get if I end up getting a 6 inch lift versus a 4? Also how would they be able to tell in the first place?

Thanks

Well how may lifted trucks do you notice that you know it has to be 6" or bigger? Being that the law is specific to the actual lift size I would imagine it would be hard for a cop to be able to tell that it was more than 4" if it was close. The cop would either have to be a truck enthusiast or would be mechanically inclined enough to find a spot to measure from that looked to be a factory suspension mount. Of course not talking about a lift that you know for sure is way more than 4". I of course don't know even the law about it in my area. But, it does seem like most places have the law that specifies the headlight height no matter the vehicle.

I don't know if ct has inspection stickers but know in ny they just past a tint law that is now checked during inspection so maybe will be good with cops but could be screwed by inspection?

You'd already be breaking the law with the 4" lift once you factor in the new tire height. I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for a small lift. I have heard of people getting pulled over in mini monster trucks but that's a whole different ball field.

No inspection in CT so I doubt anyone would ever bother you. Unless you had an officer looking for any reason to take you down. But that would most likely be personal and never during a traffic stop

I also live in CT and I used to have a TJ with a 4.5" lift and some bigger than stock tires, never got hassled. There are trucks in my town with 12"+ lifts that I see driving daily and they seem to be fine. I'm guessing if you're ever trespassing, or getting pulled over for something unrelated and are being a dick it's something they CAN enforce if they want, but I think it's pretty relaxed for the most part.

Mississippi does not have a height restriction, but I wish they would ticket these assholes with fvcking tires hanging outside the fenders kicking rocks and road debris onto vehicles behind them. As you can see I hate lifted trucks with big mud tires!

I just learned Maine uses vehicle weight.

the heavier it is, the higher you can go.

over 7500 can be 30 inches to bottom of frame and ground.

if legislation does not want to be bothered, they probably just threw that number out to get something written in CT.

I was living in moosup, CT in the early 80s, a lifted truck had a freak mishap with people in the back, bodies went flying.

that episode made some serious news about lifts..laws and arguments. Not just Connecticut.

I ponder that is still in the roots on whatever they came up with. Not a common thing to prove a lift kit deadly.

In reality, as I grew up in my driving years in maine, with wimpy half tons getting swamped..

from 88 onward a 4x4 does not need much. Lift kits just strain geometry, top speed handling etc.

Up to you, not just the law to think about.

Seeing what just 4 inches does to a differential height gain is really silly when push comes to shove.

I've never seen anyone harassed over a lift, but around here they get after the trucks with the tires sticking way out from under the fenders.

Laws differ just look it up for your area they typically specify a certain bumper height so if your lift moves your bumper surface up to high you could be in violation and technically I might have to make a citizens arrest and confiscate your vehicle for some 4 wheeling activity.......

The flashier you look, the more attention you attract, both good and bad. Keep it classy and subtle and don't worry about it

Thanks guys for the input. I think I'm leaning to 4, inch lift with 33. Play it say and at the same time give me the stance I was. If I went with a 6 inch lift I would also then want 35 but that would require re gearing my current 3.42 to something bigger.

I got harassed in New Jersey for having a off-road bike in the bed while I was driving around the pine barrens...they could have cared less about the truck, but I was guilty because the bike was back there...

Now that I've been looking at picks. I'm so torn between a 6 and 4, inch lift. Sure I'll have to re gear lol. Driving around I've seen people with what looks to be taller than 4 inch. So definitely a lot of people exceed the limit.

Really both looks good. 4 inch with 33 or 6 inch with 35.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
