Help with new battery

Recommended Posts

I have a 2016 z71 5.3 my battery is starting to die. Probably my fault. I work in my truck and use lots of gadgets,WiFi Hotspots and whatnot. So I'm asking two things here...

1 how many CCA does our factory batteries have...

I'm looking good to go higher than what I have.

2 can you suggest a good solid battery.

Auto zone just showed me a optima battery. He says that's what I need. It was 1000 ca and 800 CCA with 50 AH

Your battery should be coved under warranty unless you are over on mileage.

It might be idk. I kind of think they would worm their way out of replacing it. Plus the batteries that come with these new trucks are low quality. I'm thinking just get a beefy batt or maybe even two. Wire them in series and that will give me plenty of juice. I thought someone would know the CCA on these stock batteries.

I do not know what the OEM battery rating is but I would guess in the the <700 CCA range. Sounds like your issue is the battery not withstanding regular near drains and recharges. The Optima Yellow Top (Deep Cycle) is strongly rated for the deep cycle issue. The Optima Red Top has a few more cranking amps and would probably also work well and it is a few dollars cheaper if your budget is tight. Really any high quality battery will make a world of difference. You must be a good ways away from your dealership not to have them just put a new battery in under warranty? You might call them and see if they would let you upgrade to a high quality battery for a minimal charge before you shoulder the entire cost for a new battery yourself?

You'll want to wire them in parallel... series would be 24 VDC. No bueno.

Optima is a good battery...but sizing is always an issue - you'll have to modify the tray/hold down for it to fit properly. You'ld be better off getting an AGM battery - Interstate and Bosch (and others) have them. Believe the correct size is H7/94R.

From the AC Delco website, it looks like your factory battery was 720 CCA with a 140 reserve capacity. The battery in your truck should have a label that says for sure. I'd make your dealer replace it under warranty. If the replacement AC Delco goes south, then you know you need a better battery or 2 batteries.

We meant the same thing I just said it wrong. I've wire multiple batteries on my rv.

If you are running all your gadgets with the truck off, its not the CCAs you need to be concerned with, its the Ah.

I'm currently investigating the alternator on my 2016 5.3 CC. It's 150 amp and can handle all the loads I throw at it without any voltage reduction. Normally I see 14 volts. However the truck is designed to lower the alternator output voltage after the computer determines the battery is charged, and the load is low. That's when I have measured its output at a low of 12.56 volts using a Digital Voltage Meter (very little load the the time). This is too low! It's allowing my battery to begin discharging.

I was at the dealer getting recall service, and they told me my battery was 1/2 discharged and asked if I use any accessories with the engine off. I don't. I'm very careful about power management, especially since I have an RV and go dry camping with a solar panel and generator when needed. The dealer charged my battery and ran a load test. They said it tested above spec (vehicle had less than 10k miles at the time).

I'm currently waiting until warmer weather because that's when the low voltage condition occurs the most. I plan go directly to the dealer when its occurring, and have them measure the running voltage before I turn it off.

The reason I mention all this is because it could be the reason a battery prematurely dies. It's being charged and discharged through many 1/2 cycles because the vehicle computer is not maintaining proper voltage.
