Temp control knob removal ????

Hey there folks. I'm new to this particular forum but not new to this site. I was a member of the Ford F-150 forum until I traded that into a Black 2015 Sierra Denali with the 6.2. like the truck so far. Like others have said the tranny could uses some rethinking but OMG at the power this truck has. Love that. So, 1) I wanted to say hello and thanks for keeping great resources like this open. And, 2) I have a question and need some help you good folks don't mind.

I had a coffee cup full of coffee tumble forward out of the cup holder and some of it splashed up into the dash. A few drops must have gotten into my temp control knob and now it sticks a good bit. Can any of you tell me how to remove it or where I can find instructions? I'd like to be able to clean all that off so it's smooth again.

Thanks for any help you all can give me. I truly appreciate it.

Yes. I sure do. It didn't seem to want to pull off at all. However, I did not pull very hard. Was afraid to considering the "auto" push button is part of that dial knob as well. I'm afraid I'll have to pay someone to remove the entire assembly just to clean a dang knob. But I can't have that thing breaking one day because it's sticking.

The climate control section pops out the back of the entertainment area once that part is pulled off the dash. I'm not sure that's going to help you, as I don't know if the climate portion comes apart at all.

 

Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the backside of the climate controls, as I was messing with the screen. But I do have a shot of where it pops out of so you can an idea of what I'm talking about.

If you are not comfortable with removing trim pieces, or not sure of how to fix the problem, I would take it to a gm dealer and pay to have it repaired. My coffee doesn't always hit the intended target but never interfered with the function of my truck! Is it possible this coffee spill and the timing of this malfunction are coincidental? If your truck is under warranty this may not cost you. If it is not, having a dealership look at it may save you long term.

My goodness! That looks pretty intimidating to me. Especially in such an expensive truck. I'm not over familiar with removing face plates. I may have to pay for it as my truck is out of warranty by 1000 miles. LoL.

What had happened was.....Driving down a steep mountain road and took a right at a fork but needed to take a left. Hit the brakes and my 30oz RTIC mug (with lid) tumbled forward squirting coffee straight at the HVAC controls. I have the handle on my tumbler so it doesn't sit down in the cupholder as tightly as it should. Being on that steep decline and hitting the brakes was too much for it to stay put. Rookie mistake.

I'll just pay the stealership to take it off and clean it. Not worth busting a faceplate to try and do it myself. But thanks for the replies and helpful pics. I appreciate it fellas.

Try a quick drying rinse like rubbing alcohol - not a lot - but worth a try rather than have it torn apart and deal with possible squeaks and rattles from then on..........

If you are not going to dismantle the dash and go with the above...........might I suggest using a vacuum in conjunction with the spay bottle to slow up the penetration process so you would be chipping away a little at a time.......might use up a lot more solvent but limit the area affected.

Paper town and alcohol? If not you can get a new module for the AC controls on eBay, for not a bad price.

Best thing I found for this kind of thing is a steamer. I have one of the bissel steamers for your clothes and stuff... it worked wonders for my rear steering wheel buttons. It has an attachment that allows you to get the steam where you need it.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer told you it needed to be replaced. I rarely hear of them repairing parts instead of replacing them.

I know it's an old thread but I have a similar issue with my 2021 Sierra. Soda spilled all over the controls and even though I immediately took compressed air to them, they are completely sticky and sometimes stay stuck.

 

Has anyone successfully taken the climate control knobs off? I know mine are a little different design.

      Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.

      No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.

      Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.

      I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
