Integrated trailer brake problems

So I have a 2015 crew with integrated trailer brakes I have used them twice first time plug trailer in and they popped up on dash only issue I hadon't was going down the highway a few times it would pop up trailer not connected but then it reconnect thinking it was a loose. connection. On trip back home I made sure it was in all the way and had no issue at all. Last night I hooked up same trailer and it doesn't recognize that the trailer is even hooked up. I check all fuses all were good tested all lights work but nothing from brakes. Service trailer brakes did pop up one time when starting truck but at the time I didn't have trailer hooked up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on where to look next. Before I end up taking it in.

Check the wiring for obvious wire shorts. I would also try the wire harness with an ampmeter... make sure you're wiring issues aren't under the bed.

Me too. But it's easier to plug in an ampmeter than it is to crawl around under a trailer.

Trailer is OK checked with other truck. On brake output with meter less than one volt With brakes applied . Like I said fuses are all good. And have Power at fuse box.

Are all the terminals clean in plug?

the brakes will not put out voltage unless load is sensed in circuit

the next likely location for corrosion is the back of the bumper plug, there is a lock to release to remove plug. Spare tire out is a wise idea then access is good to back side. there is not enough silicone grease to prevent water intrusion.

Yes, eliminate the easiest first. Spraying some contact cleaner or WD40 on/in the connector may solve your issues. Also, check to see if you have a direct ground wire from your trailer to your vehicle.

I keep getting the service trailer brake message. Last month dealer found nothing wrong but cleaned all connections and applied dielectric grease. Day after picking up the message was on a again. Then it went 3 weeks without the message until last weekend. Just dropped it off at the dealer today. I hope they just replace the module by the spare tire.

I am still getting this message. Brought to dealer last week and they found nothing wrong again. I am really getting tired of this message pop up. When it does come on it will come on every 2 minutes while driving. Only solution I found to turn it off when driving is set gain on on the dash switch and it goes off. It will stay off for a few weeks then come on again?

Sorry I forgot to mention that the message has only come on when I am not towing anything. Everything I have towed has surge brakes not electric so I have never used the trailer brake controller. Also the message has never com on when towing.

This stupid message is still coming on.  When it comes on it repeats every 5 sec until I either turn truck off or adjust trailer brake gain on dash switch.  This is always when I am not towing so it is not a trailer issue. The dealer keeps saying they find nothing wrong even after I take pics of the message so they just clean connections.  The last time it came on was a few hours after going through a car wash.  I am now under extended warranty how do I get dealer to actually replace and fix it. My dealer sucks they never do any repairs and say they cannot duplicate the issue.

a friends 2014 denali does this intermittently ,same crap from dealership nothing wrong. i told him to try and work the slide control back and forth and he said that would shut it off for awhile. replaced the switch in the dash and the problem is gone, the question is for how long being the new switch is identical to the old one

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
