Might trade into a 17 what to look out for

I might be trading in my 2014 Silverado DC LT for an equivalent 2017 today. Anything specifically i should look out for? Is the shake still an issue on this model year? thanks

bed alignment still an issue too?

 

More expensive/harder to tune.

 

Terrible gas cap design.

bed was slightly off on my mom's '17, but easy fix performed before delivery

my '17 has been good

go trade, look forward to a great truck :)

 

BTW my gas cap is fine

This question has been discussed recently so you may find more responses by scrolling down the topics list. The best suggestion is to find the truck that you like and take it for a test-drive. Chances are in your favor that there will be no rattles or shakes! I would also consider waiting until fall for when the yearend savings are high. If you are looking for a similarly equipped truck, you may discover that you will be further ahead keeping your current truck for a couple of more years. The new car smell subsides rather quickly!

a little more on my situation

my lease is up in august and i was planning on buying it out. Already ran the numbers and payment will be about the same. Im above water so the truck holds some value at the moment. My dads self proclaimed "master negotiator" and he thinks that he can get me into a new truck for the same payment with only first month out of pocket. I have a wedding and down payment on a house to pay for so keeping payment the same ($290/month) and minimal out of pockets are musts. I am going to need brakes and tires soon for my 2014 so my theory is that i can take the money I would've spent on that and put it down on something new and just go from there. I guess ill know by the end of the day lol.

The shake, transmission chuggle, schizophrenic CarPlay, tailgates that improperly close, headlights that fall off... these are recurring issues with my '17. Indicative of all? No. Enough to make me swear off GM forever? Yes.

 

Edit: don't forget horrible AC systems.

did they change the gearing in the transmission? Seems like the lot is filled with trucks with 3:42 gearing instead of 3:08 from when i got the other one in 14

I mean, honestly there's not a huge difference between the 2014-2017 models aside from cosmetics. And some versions might have the 8-speed tranny.

 

I guess CarPlay if that makes a difference.

 

If your lease is over in August why do it now? Prices aren't going to go up on 2017s and the 2018s will be out in Q3/Q4 like always. Gonna get a much better deal around then.

The shake is on maybe .01-.02% of all trucks, very rare.

 

Transmission chuggle? You mean being tuned for mpg, most manufacturers have this where it shifts early and can hunt, especially with multiple gears. My rental Santa Fe does the same thing.

 

Never heard of improperly closing tailgates, mine nor anyone I know has an issue.

 

Headlights that fall off? WTF, what scenario has that happened to the one person where that is a factor?

 

I guess maybe BMW's are more your thing?

 

OP, even though you are not having to front the costs of brakes and tires you are throwing away 3 years of payments to start all over. Essentially you are spending around $10k to not pay $1k on brakes and tires. I would keep the truck, it makes the most sense financially if you are thinking that way.

If you do make the switch - step up to the plate and get the 6.2L.............

to this day I have driven 8 different K2XX Silverado 1500s 2014-2017. The 17s were rentals while mine was in the shop for shitty downshifting. 6 of them had a shake including my own truck, but mines nowhere near bad enough for me to care. trans shifting in mine is far worse and more annoying

As long as we're talking anecdotes, I've drive mine and 5 others, and never noticed this "shake" some people see.

    • Length/amount of data capture will be important to consider, sifting through 5 minutes of a data log can be enormous when it is stored in milliseconds. Being able to find the 'event' let alone decipher it.   Presumably the driver would notice something and hit a button to capture the 'window' of data. That window has to be large enough for the operator to recognize the event and react accordingly.    The data has to be able to be retrieved easily.   The data has to be able to be understood. Which is the biggest challenge, dealer techs won't even know what most of it is and would likely not even look at it if an owner brought it to them. Meaning the owner, the least educated/qualified, trying to understand it.    How will the data be presented? Could specific PIDs be selected and a timelapse graph be watched? How will a specific value be noted as abnormal? Additionally, a good data logger would be able to 'learn' normal values for a specific vehicle and flag abnormalities automatically. It could in theory watch parameters degrade over time and suggest maintenance as needed. (If the MAF reading begins tapering off for a given set of other readings - MAP, throttle position, Ambient, etc.. a flag to check air filter.) With the amount of data available, a device (really the vehicle rather than an additional accessory) should be able to do more than issue a DTC. It should be able to run the full diagnostic suite automatically and present a solution rather than a code. (It's not the 90's anymore). The technology is available for the vehicle to not just say "P0087", it should know low fuel pressure, check other PIDs to narrow down the problem itself, and determine if it is a lift pump, high pressure pump, regulator, leak in the fuel line, clogged filter, etc. Even if it can't narrow it down, it should be able to guide the user to the likely problems.   This would be a major problem for dealer service departments, which are the manufacturers customers it is in their collective best interest to NOT have this available to the consumer.   Further, if the owner is going to be the primary consumer of the data, it's got to be at a consumer price point vs. dealer only specialty tool price.   This group is more 'involved' in their vehicle than general public/consumer and will have knowledge, experience, needs and desires that are quite different from the market at large.

    • Lets see if I can sum up two pages of nothing useful.    You want to refute your own governments data of the "Purchasing Power" Index FOR THE ENTIRE USA and its territories replacing it with the experience of a single family and its business and label that reality?  Then pound on that for a week hoping it will find traction?    Stan, I've told you several times. I don't do irrational. There are more people in the USA than your family.    I'm pretty sure this tread is so blown up. I'll give you a few days or months if need be to post yourself silent then I'll see if I can find enough parts of the train to reassemble it. 
    • Facebook groups hate VSE, poor customer service; their responses to criticisms are pretty poor for a reputable company. I'm not a customer, haven't bought anything from them, but how they handle themselves on social media is a definite "No" for me. 
    • $10,000 for a transmission?   Pretty sure I could buy all the parts, tools, and education to rebuild it myself for a quarter of that amount.   or swap it out with a new one...
