Smudge under clear coat on silver Sierra

Anyone seen this before? Noticed it after my first good clean on my new 2017. It's a dark smudge under the clearcoat; defect with the base. I'm sure if I made a fuss about it I could have them repaint it but I'm very apprehensive... Bodyshop work never seems to restore things 100% to factory.

Is it truly under the clearcoat - i.e. the clearcoat perfectly smooth and shiny like the surrounding area, or upon exam is there micro cracking in the clearcoat?

Damn birds in this area crap battery acid like poop or a mechanic could have had some solvent on while prepping - which if left on a few days crack the clearcoat and eat into the color coat. If it is a factory defect and the clearcoat is completely intact - decide if you can live with it because the unless the dealer is willing to go for a door swap with another vehicle, the cure might be worse than the illness.

Once had a dealer swap hoods, but that was before I signed the papers.

Yeah, unfortunately this is a defect with the base. Clear coat is intact and in good condition. I spent a few years as a detailer so I'm confident it's not repairable without paint work.

A swap with another factory door is about all I'd accept. I think I'd rather live with it than have the door repainted.

It's super obvious from almost any angle in good like. I'm shocked (and a bit discouraged) that it managed to make it through inspection.

I respectfully disagree with leaving it or only settling for a door swap. I would let your dealer know how upset you are (calmly) and also let them know how particular you are about a flawless repair. A good body shop will make it right. This smudge is unsightly and I agree it needs to be repaired.

I'm just worried that I'll be left unsatisfied with the respray and wishing I'd just left the factory paint with the defect. Once I go that route there's no going back... Far as I'm concerned no human can match the quality of the factory paint robots (even though one of them clearly had a bad day here...).

My 2000 Silverado was a similar color. It was my truck but seemed to be the spare vehicle for my wife and adult children. I always own a scratch and dent free vehicle but for some mysterious reason this truck needed an inordinate amount of "touch-ups". I quickly learned that not all body shops are created equal! However, when you find one with a good paint shop, you will be fine. There is a reasonably good chance this won't be the only blemish you will have to deal with on your new truck!

I have found about a 4 inch long horiz scratch on the door of my new truck that was not noticeable until it was washed a few times. Looks like the dealership tried to buff it out and then put a heavy coat of wax or something over the area which has diminished with every wash and exposed the half assed attempt at repair. In bright light it stands out like a sore thumb with a big halo around where the buffer destroyed the clearcoat and the scratch is prominent. Talked to them but the say they had NUTIN to do with it Yeah right. Thought that if I could get the info on exactly what they did that I might be able to get a local detail expert to see if they could fix it but they say they know nothing, sigh we live in a cold cruel world.

It's discouraging. The deal we all want is simple enough: we throw huge amounts of money at you, and you supply us with a reliable vehicle in 'new' condition. Seems that's too much to ask in the era of profit maximization...

It is possible this repair was done prior to your vehicle reaching the dealership. I would follow this up with your salesman, the management of the dealership and/or GM customer service. Try to put them in a position of supporting you, and not in a defensive mode. Your satisfaction does not cost any of the employees a penny but there is also no reward for giving in to a combative customer. I find it is very difficult to be cold and cruel when treated with kindness and respect. I am not suggesting you mishandled the situation but recommending you don't give up and try a different approach. Return to the dealer seeking their help in resolving this issue.

it is of course possible that it was done before they got it but not very probable LOL.

I was very nice to them and even mentioned that it could have been done at the factory or on the car hauler. The salesman is going to see if there is anything that the dealership could do so I have not completely given up yet. My current plan is to simply not wash it and let the dirt buildup and hide the scratch until I can decide how to proceed. If it had been on the passenger side i would never even have mentioned it. The problem is when the sun is shining down the side of the truck and I walk up to get in it really shows the scratch bad and that irritates me to no end. I feel like that if I knew exactly what was done that it would go a long ways toward getting an expert auto detail shop to attempt a proper repair. Just real hesitant to let anybody do anything that might make it worse than it already is.

In cases like this where there is a cosmetic defect that should be fixed but doesn't necessarily need to be, do dealers ever just write a cheque as a partial refund and call it even? I don't want to get my door sprayed because I don't think it will ever perfectly match the rest of the vehicle, but it really annoys me that I paid for a "new" vehicle as this was included from the factory.

We are both pretty much in the same frame of mind. I am not going to repaint the door for the same reasons that you mentioned. How much would it be for a shop to repaint a door anyway 4 or $500.00? I am not interested in a lot of compensation but I would like to know that this dealership will be more responsible and not be trying to hoodwink their customers in the future. Sometimes you have to get into their pocket to make them pay attention. Had a really heavy rain here today and truck is good and dirty so scratch is almost invisible now. I am just SOOOOOOOO happy haha

When I parked this evening the scratch and buffed area had caught the sun at just the right angle and you can see the mess that was made of the door. It may have to actually be repainted to ever fix this. Makes me sick to my stomach. The truck is extremely dirty but not dirty enough to hide that disaster. I am not sure what to do as the dealership is denying any liability because I did not see it before I drove it off the lot. It really did not show up until I had washed the truck 3 or 4 times they had coated some kind of heavy wax coating over the area.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
