Chevy vs tundra

Hey guys I'm new to the thread and am looking for opinions. I am looking to get a new truck and I'm torn on whether to get a 2012 Silverado or a 2012 tundra. I am also looking to put a 6in lift with 35's on it. What I want to know is what will be more reliable in the long run and what we be cheaper to repair. All opinions welcome thanks!

Well my opinion is that since you're asking this on a GM forum that 99% of your responses will be saying to buy a GM. Same goes if you asked this same question on a Toyota forum, they will say to buy a Toyota.

I've been a GM and Chevy guy ever since I can remember. I'll always buy GM. But, I will say that Toyota used to be one of the best with compact trucks, like Nissan. But, now a days I think all of the US domestic brands and Japanese brands are all about equal when it comes to being reliable and repairs. Even brand new vehicles (not just trucks) may have problems because of all of the out sourcing.

All I can say is to test drive both and see what you like and don't like. Then weigh the pros and cons of both to figure out what might be better for you.

J- I'd have to say reliability wise the 2012s are probably almost evenly matched, with perhaps a slight edge with the Tundra. That being said they are both very good Trucks for that year. (I can't say the same for the 2014+ models with all the shake issues reported on here, though those are a small number vs all the trucks out on the road) That being said- If fuel economy and money is not a concern, I'd find a 6.2L Silverado. You'll appreciate the extra HP that the 6.2L offers, especially if you are going to run a lift.

You're comparing two five+ year old trucks. The current price and condition of these two should be the deciding factors. If it was comparing two brand new versions for the same price, you'd probably get more truck with the Silverado.

Honestly, if you have the cash to put down on a lift, tires, and wheels, I'd put that down and get a newer truck.

Maintenance in these used trucks will also determine reliability. Probably won't know what you'll have until it's too late

Well the way I see it is I'd rather have a truck that's modded how I want than have a brand new truck that's stock for the most part. Obviously he doesn't have the money to have both a brand new truck and put a lift on it. Plus it seems like even brand new vehicles have issues so really he's probably not gaining much by getting a brand new truck over one that's just 5 years old.

Either truck is good for 2012. Both you will have update some parts.

i owned a 2007 tundra DC 4x4 and a 2014 tundra DC 4x4 both lifted on 35s. between both trucks over 200k miles without ever seeing the shop. Including a lot of very harsh off road miles chasing my buddy in his raptor I loved those trucks, but after moving across the country (forced to sell the 14 before we moved as it was my 3rd vehicle) i decided to try a Chevy.

The Chevy has been good to me so far, and is nicer on the inside, but the tundras throttle response, and butter smooth transmission i am really starting to miss. I DONT miss the gas mileage i got. i was averaging about 8mpg highway with a procomp stage 2 lift, and 35x12.5x20 Toyo Open Country RTs.

good luck, drive both and see what you personally like better. vehicles are a very personal choice.

A few opinions.

1. I have bought used vehicles all my life. I look for clean vehicles with about 40k - 45k miles. You will have a hard time finding a 12 with that low mileage IMO. Highest mileage vehicle I bought had 61k miles on it. 1 owner 2007 Accord. Wife's car bought 1/2012, still have it. My current truck 2012 Sierra SLT 41k miles bought 11/2015. Previous truck 93 Silverado with 42k miles.

Over all these vehicles had no major problems. The Accord had the A/C compressor fail last summer. The 93 nothing until 230k miles then trans replaced. The Sierra nothing. The usual maintenance, oil, filters, batteries, and 1 water pump and alternator on the 93.

2. The look of the Toyota's remind me of Hot Wheels cars.

3. I do agree that a newer vehicle instead of the lifting etc. is the way to go.

I sold my 07 Tundra last year. Someone offered me way more then the book value. The Toyota run and drove great, and was very dependable. As far as new ones go I think Chevy offers a little more for the money, they are also much better looking IMHO.
