I was wondering if anyone has had a plugged catalytic converter? the truck is currently in the dealers shop, The truck has 4000 km on it lost power and stalled on the side of the road no warning no cil before. The dealer is replacing the catalytic converter first they can't get it to run and GM will not let them do anything until they replace the catalytic converter.

i don't know if the catalytic converter got melted down or plugged they had not cut it open yet.

Dealer won't cut it open, most likely will get sent to GM for testing. First I've heard of a possible cat failure so early on the mileage.

got a email from dealer that is working on it. Broken valve stem #7 cylinder they say there is no damage. i asked them if i could see the valve and what would stop the valve from hitting the piston no response yet.

That's an AFM cylinder. Sounds like there was an AFM lifter failure, possibly stuck locked (so not deactivated) and it did some damage. I forsee a whole bank of AFM lifters, a pushrod, rocker arm and valve being installed unless there is piston damage. Better hope they dig a little deeper on that cylinder and check those lifters on that cylinder or better yet just replace them.

i asked how the catalytic converter got plugged so fast, and now the tell me it was not.

Just happened that when technician dropped the exhaust pipe the unit fired up so the tech assumed the problem was plugged exhaust.

i now have asked them which parts they will be changing other then the valve. We will see.

Thanks 15HDriver for the headsup on #7 being a AFM cylinder. I now know a whole lot more on AFM and how it works.

update on the valve stem. They sent me a pic it looks like it broke close to or on the retainer groove.

The dealer replaced the valve, spring, rocker arm, pushrod. The mechanic figures that this is a manufacture defect in the valve. i don't know if that is a good thing or not. This truck will be traveling on a regular basis where there is no cell service or people. Doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the product.
