E85 Usage

Over the long usage of E-85, the plastics / seals will break down in the fuel ' evap system.

Stay away from that fuel if you don't want fuel system problems.

I'm pretty sure that has been solved years ago hence the FlexFuel vs non FlexFuel versions of the same vehicles. The OEMs tell you NOT to use E85 in non-FlexFuel cars or trucks.

GM had been testing FlexFuel vehicles in Canada for years to determine which materials stand up to the alcohol in the fuels.

There's performance consideration when it comes to using E-85. It was like dumping massive amounts of caffeine in your tank. I've saved 15K when I bought my truck considering the increase in horse power that E-85 gives the 5.3. I bought a loaded Texas edition truck, I was going to buy up model just to get the 6.2. The net 40HP difference wasn't worth the money. On trips I was able to run reg gas, quite a bit of savings than running premium gas the 6.2 required.

In the year 2017, with flex fuel vehicles, people are still getting seal, injector, fuel pump - screen failures at a faster rate than using straight gasoline running straight E-85. Manufactures structure "planned failures" into all their components. Constant E-85 usage expedites fuel system failures on a more frequent basis because the plastics get brittle and break down.

For the people who are interested, here is the list materials that are compatible and non-compatible with E-85 fuels.

I don't even know where to find E85 in Alberta, Canada even if it's available. I'm perfectly happy with a truck that burns 87 with next to no maintenance requirements.

Same here in Ontario. I just started the thread as the gas station I saw on Tues' was the 1st I had noticed in my travels in the US (yes I know it's been available for years).

I Googled it earlier and came up with nothing. If there is E85 in metro Edmonton I don't know where lol

It would be fun to run a tank just to see, mind you.

The E-85 issue was pushed hard by our President Obama to get off of petroleum fuels in America.

You Canadians are lucky not to have E-85 or Obama.

I'm sure E85 will be implemented in Canada too with our socialist Liberal/NDP governments we have here in place

I feel like E85 was around before Obama either way if the refineries shut down you can make your own alcohol to run your truck but not gasoline. Nice to have dual fuel capability

Yes indeed - if you can find it, it most certainly is worth filling up with E85 one time just to feel the nice power increase. Definitely noticeable.

I contacted Justin from Black Bear Performance about an E85 tune for my truck. As you may know, in factory spec, the 5.3 makes more HP & TQ on E85 than regular unleaded. The 6.0 does not. Justin tells me it is because the compression ratio of the 6.0 is much lower (9.7:1 vs 11.0:1). He does have an E85 tune available for the 6.0. However, I'm not willing to take a chance and void my power train warranty, I was really just asking out of curiosity.

If PM Airhead AKA "The Man That Will Save The World From Climate Change All On His Own" had his way we'd probably already be told to use it @ a cost double that of 87 octane gasoline.
