Painting interior trim

I have been thinking about painting some of the interior pieces to color match the truck, just unsure of if I should scuff up these pieces first and primer or just primer and top coat? The pieces I am thinking of are the off color pieces on the dash and wheel, the trim around the cup holders and the wood trim on the door.  Has anyone tried painting the over head console? What did you do abou t the buttons?

There are several people on this forum who have painted these trim pieces. However, the search feature and I don't play well together.  You may also wish to consider the brushed aluminum trim pieces off of a GMC.

I've never painted those specific pieces, but I do know that the quality of your paint is irrelevant if the surface preparation is not done right. You should definitely sand/scuff any smooth & shiny surfaces.

 

Or try plasti-dip and then its removable if you change your mind.

Paint it just like you would any other plastic piece. Tons of YouTube videos and info online. It’s all about the prep work. Use quality paints and a 2k clear and you shouldn’t  have any issues.

So much this...

It’s all in the prep work. You can take a rattle can paint job and make it look professional with the right prep work. I did my headlight trim from a spray can. Had black paint mixed up and used spraymax 2k clear.

I was told by a paint shop that they couldn’t be painted because they would peel supposedly when they form the pieces they are already the color said the best thing to do would be wrapping them in vinyl .

You should use an plastic adhesion promoter.  Make sure it’s compatible with the paint you chose.  Your local chain auto parts store likely carries Duplicolor paints and they have a plastic adhesion promoter.  Their paints are good quality.   You might consider the effect of this mod on resale if that’s in the foreseeable future.

Was this chrome before you painted this? I wanted to do this also but was told painting chrome was not a good idea since it chips and I was better off wrapping it

I agree.  While it does sound like a cool project, you might consider wrapping in vinyl as an alternative.  It's not permanent and it will still give you the look you want.  Plus, you can find vinyls with a pattern if you so choose.

Makes sense but I cant sell my truck I have a notched frame I'm stuck with it[emoji23][emoji23]

Fair enough.  I"m just a big believer in taking small steps.  Once you scuff that trim and paint it, there's no going back aside from buying all new pieces.  With a wrap, you get to "try before you buy" in a sense.

Yea for the exterior I'm getting it wrapped just since its chrome but the interior I would like to do it myself
