What does camper shell do to fuel consumption?

Compared to a tonneau cover, shell should have the same fuel economy.  Watched my MPGs go up between the time I bought mine (open bed) and the time I got my tonneau cover installed (2 months later).  I ran some MPG checks with my 91 Nissan during the first 3 years that I had it, open bed (tailgate closed), tailgate open, replaced tailgate with ProNet, tonneau cover, and (cab high) shell.  Open gate and ProNet were the worst MPGs that I had gotten.  Saw no difference between shell and tonneau cover, and as with my '15 Silverado, better with something closing off the bed.  I imagine that the "hi-rise" will drop your MPG a little.  Sold my Nissan to my dad, around the 4th year, and he put the "Big Blue Box" on it, stuck out about the tips of the mirrors and about 24" above the cab.  OH, my Nissan was Midnight Blue Pearl. 

 

As for the color of the shell, color match.  I'm looking at getting a white shell for my black truck, but that's cause I'm hoping that it will screw with these CA drivers, make them think that there's a CHP ahead of them.  When we're in our white Cruze, the white CHP units will draft us to tag the oncoming traffic, similarly with my truck and the black/white CHP units.  Nothing like being a "human shield."

If anything a topper will hurt fuel mileage because of the added weight of the fiberglass. Some are better built and weight more than other brands.  So anyone who claims better mpg I think is fooling themselves in that respect.

I don't know if my MPG changed or not, but I like having the added covered space for cargo and its secure too:thumbs:

Yeah, no...

Tracked mileage on every tank for 300k miles...I had hard data for mine, not guessing.

I'd think the weight of those would offset any aerodynamic advantage gained, if any for MPG change.  Those suckers aren't light. 

 

So, if you want the cap for your needs, go for it, but don't expect any mileage gains.

Again, I tracked it...cap paid for itself in mileage gains. Took some time, but it did...

I purchased Leer for my 2016 RCSB within a few months of getting truck..

Did not notice "any" mileage changes from open bed, but did notice a bit more wind buffeting at interstate speeds..

Since these units are about 195 Lbs +, will be curious on bed weight for extra traction this upcomming winter..

 

Photo taken before new BFG KO2's installed,, now that is different subject as mileage dropped a bit..

I had a bakflip Mx4 matte black cover, really liked it...we needed more space for my wife's business, so ended up with a camper...I didn't think I would like it, but I do...although you can have covered cargo, it does limit the amount of stuff you can have (height wise)...pros and cons to both...cost being a huge difference...

 

My mpg's dropped slightly from when I first put my cover on, and slightly dropped when I put my topper on...the kicker is (like most guys on here) I also have a level, larger tires, and an after market muffler, and even an after market front bumper...all of which can impact the mpg's...so it is tough to isolate the exact effect the topper/cover might have...

 

either way, it certainly isn't enough for me to NOT get another one if I were to get a new truck!  would strongly encourage a cover of some kind.

You can see the tabs on the rear and across the top of the rear portion of the cab.  Just like Keith, this was before BFG KO2's next size up from stock were installed. It already had the 2" McGaughy's drop shackles in the rear end installed so it didn't look so much like a cat in heat.

I may have missed,, but where did you get your Tabs??

Do they stick on via 3M adheisive?

 

Not to dwell on tires,, but installed "upsized 285/55/20's BFG-KO2's with Nitrogen fill a few weeks ago from crap Goodyear 275/55/20 SRA's..

Also Nerf bars for GF...

Did notice about 4-tenths drop in overall mileage from 19mpg to about 18.6mpg, but handling has greatly improved as will as looks..

I have probably a heavier one than say a normal cab high.  It's the snug top XTR and they weighs 300 lbs but have ability to hold 300-400lbs on top of the Shell.  It's a significant amount of weight just the Topper and probably has little to no effect on mpg's.  I have since added probably 300LBS of added crap from MODS and other random stuff I carry.......I mean car seats, tools etc.  I get the same MPG's pretty much on HWY/City and with Family added and luggage driving extended miles across states it maxs out @ 22.8 mpg's  So I think the Topper sorta helps especially if just doing HWY all the time.  How else could I add all that weight and not be penalized?  The airflow on HWY cancelled it out is my belief....

 

Just get a freaking topper!  Once you go topper you never go back.......

I got the tabs right from the Air Tab website.  Actually, the ones I put on the 2500 were a batch left over from when I did my semi truck a couple of years earlier.  Yeah, they stick on with 3M.

    • My office is slowly filling with Blazer parts. Getting ready to do the big bang of repairs. Intake (second time), water pump, radiator, hoses, and I'm going to re-seal the timing cover where someone went hog wild with silicone. Might as well, because I don't think that's done right.   There's a local tow yard that I didn't realize also has quite the inventory of junk vehicles. This is an old school junkyard. No waivers. Cash only, you were never here if anyone asks. Don't piss off the owner, or you'll end up in the back of one of those cars, headed for the shredder. And if you see something, don't snitch. Cars stacked double high, wasps nests, trip hazards and junk everywhere. I found a few little odds/ends for my Blazer. The $20 I spent was worth the experience alone. But I was never there. What yard?   I officially love/hate this truck. It's so out of my wheelhouse, roughest vehicle I've ever owned. Every. single. repair. -is so hard-fought, everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. Currently in a hate phase, and kind of wish I was closer to sending it down the road with a lucky new owner, to be honest. Preparing for the day when I tear into this thing...lots of pre-funk with Ibuprofen.   Rock Auto sent me a bad reman rear wiper motor. It was a bear to install. The tailgate in these things has about eleventy-billion fastners and pieces and things that need to be uninstalled/moved just to access the shoddy rear wiper motor. The casing on mine was cracked clean through, btw. Nice, GM, nice. SO I got this new motor installed, hit the switch, I see it wig-wag (without the arm installed) and think I'm golden. Reassemble everything. With the wiper arm installed I gave it one final test. Time to clean up and take the other half out to dinner, collect a paycheck, right?   Nope. I hear the plastic worm gear stripping as the arm hung up. Just like my broken motor. Weak/old and shredding itself internally. I can assist the arm and the range of motion is normal, and it parks correctly. It just doesn't have the poop to actually sweep the arm with a blade on it. Oh, hell. Turned the key off and shut the shop door behind me. I get to do that over again, too.
    • A complete delete is the most thorough mechanical solution, but it is also major engine work. On a quiet truck that is still under extended warranty, opening the engine purely as prevention is difficult to justify. A plug-in disabler stops commanded cylinder deactivation, but it does not remove or repair the collapsible lifters, so it should not be treated as failure insurance. I would keep the oil full, document the maintenance, and have any persistent tick, misfire, or loss of power diagnosed promptly. If the engine eventually has to come apart, that is the logical time to compare an OEM-style repair with a complete delete. The right choice depends on the truck’s symptoms, warranty status, expected ownership period, and whether the engine already needs to be opened.     • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?  
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
