Did I get a decent deal?

If you are getting a good enough deal, they do hate cash.  They sometimes will try and build some of that money they get for financing into the "price reduction" they are giving you.  I have had a finance officer try and refuse a sale after I told him I had my own financing and I didn't want them to run my credit.

Hating the deal and hating cash are two different things. Dealers get cash for EVERY deal ----- how can they hate it?

It's been a little over 3 years since I bought my truck but I got it for 23% or so off sticker (42k msrp and paid 32k not counting taxes)  My buddy got his 16 LTZ for nearly the same percent off last year and another got his Ford this year for about 20% off.  These trucks are way over priced and if you can not find a dealer to come down at least 15% off the price on a new one (that includes what ever crazy "doc" fees they charge) then you need to look else where.  OP, you got a nice truck their but since you asked the question then NO, you did not get a good deal, you should've bought new.  If you are having to borrow money to pay for the truck then your getting less of a good deal.  I tried to buy used back in 2014 but couldn't get any dealer to sell me a 2-3 year old truck with less than 25k miles for less than $30k so spent a couple thousand more and bought new.

I live in a very saturated car dealer market so they are all trying to undercut each other. The absolute best price I could find on a 2017 marked down was $42,000

Here is a link of what I have. Same exact truck except mines a '16. The Internet price includes a bunch of rebates that I did not qualify for. All in all, it would have been $10k more to buy a discounted 2017. More than just a couple grand.

My 2017 LT 1500 midnight DC had an msrp of $51.2, I paid $41.8.. Probably not the best deal in the world, but I was happy with it and it was right in line with the pricing at all dealerships around Boston. That was mid year, I'm sure I could do a bit better on a 2017 now.

At just under 10k miles now, I'm very happy with it. I really wanted an LTZ but the discounts were only coming in at around $5/6k off msrp vs almost $10k off an LT. I wasn't shopping for a midnight edition in particular, but it was the only LT on the lot that had everything I wanted (and then some) including heated leather, Bose, power rear window, homelink remote, 8" mylink with nav/CarPlay, remote start, factory spray in bedliner, tow package, adjustable pedals, blah, blah, blah.. I also negotiated $800 OEM black rectangular running boards into the deal.

Plus I got $8k for my 2008 Tacoma AC 4x4 with 180k miles on it. So it was around $33.8 with trade, not including tax.

Cash = Less Profit.  Cash != Financing.  I don't know how much more clear I can be.

Preferring to get the financing, and hence more profit. is not the same as hating cash. I've bought many vehicles and have yet to encounter a dealer who had a problem when I pulled out my checkbook.

You must not be getting a good enough deal then :P

You make the deal. Then you talk terms. It's always better if they think you are going to finance. But you keep your cards face down. My point is that they don't hate cash. Maybe you could choose another, more appropriate, word. I figure if no other dealer within 500 miles will touch the deal I have in place I must have done OK.

How is this even possible???

I took my Truck that I just bought for $31.9k in to a random Toyota dealership to see what they would give me. I figured this would give me a good idea as to the value. I told them I wasn't particularly in the market unless I could get what I wanted for the truck. I had them appraise it before talking about purchasing any new vehicle.

They told me that they would give me $32.5.........how in the hell is a dealer going to give me more than what I paid for it?

They'll make it up on the other end. Now that they know you want to trade, they won't give you as good of a deal on the new one.

Wait a minute.. you already took the truck you just bought to a Toyota dealer to see the trade in value? Why would you do that?

Sounds like you’re not 100% happy with your purchase.

As stated they make it up on the new vehicle. It’s simple car wheeling and dealing. The more they give you for trade, the less they discount the new truck. Did they give you final price on the new truck with the trade? If not, the 32.5 number doesn’t mean anything.

I didn't even look at any trucks. I only took it to a Toyota dealer because I drove my grandfather to a doctor's appointment and there was one across the street. I had time to kill so I figured I'd see how much it was worth. It could have been a Volkswagen dealer for all I cared.

It is only worth that amount if they are willing to write you a check for your old truck for that amount (not trading it, just selling it to them).  I highly doubt they would do that.  As mentioned above, it is a shell game and they will not come off their new vehicle price much.  When I buy a vehicle and am trading my old truck in I tell them to give me the total price for the new vehicle after accounting for trade in and fees but NOT TAXES and REGISTRATION.  I usually tell them that I don't care and don't need to know the value of my truck or what fees they tack on because in the end it doesn't matter, I just need to know the final price so I can compare it with the dealership down the road.

IMO

Never mention you have a trade.

Always establish the price of the vehicle to purchase.

Then get the price of the trade.

Never mention financing.

All ways for the dealer to  make money and cloud the deal.

And if they directly ask “do you have a trade?” How do you respond? And if they ask about financing what do you say? I’m genuinely curious. I’ve heard this advice forever but never how to answer those questions. If you are evasive they know you are trying to hide something
