GM eliminating last human control in 2019

2019 model year GM trucks will lose their last human control on the vehicle....now going to be electric parking brake.

Throttle- Been drive by wire for decades

Steering- Went electric a few years ago

Brakes- Computer controlled ABS been out for decades

Last thing in a vehicle that can still be operated by a human on a vehicle....parking brake....

Now we will be just like Airline pilots....merely placing a vote on what we want the vehicle to do....a computer decides for us...

Discussion on WHY eliminating the last human control in a motor vehicle please....

do a little more fact checking next time, electric parking brakes have been around FOR YEARS. and on your 'Electric' steering, that is the power assist going electric; there is still a mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. (although Infiniti has been dabbling with something called Direct Adaptive Steering, which is that 'Steer by Wire' you fear so much) and as for the service brakes, there hasn't been a direct mechanical link for almost a century thanks to Fred Dusenberg and the advent of Hydraulic brakes.

Both of my trucks have mechanical parking brakes, and both of my cars have electric parking brakes. I'll take the electric please.

So...it appears there is some confusion here interpreting the article.  It does not mention an electronic parking brake (which the new trucks will have).

The article mentions the possibility of "brake by wire" which means your brake pedal potentially has no connection to the main braking system.

To quote the article:

Quote

The next-generation pickups are expected to use braking-by-wire to reduce mechanical parts and have a new 10-speed automatic transmission that GM co-developed with Ford, which already is using the technology on the F-150.

BBW has to be the most idiot thing I've ever heard of. Well, about even with steer by wire. Bout time to buy that horse.

Well my neighbors 2016 Cadillac XT5 has a electric parking brake, I just drove it to the store yesterday with him in it and I was looking for the parking brake release and found it was electric. I think the poster is way behind as this is already in some vehicles.

Good enough for by far some of the fastest race cars in existence:  http://www.racecar-engineering.com/articles/2014-f1-explained-what-is-brake-by-wire/

Brembo says its on its way:  http://articles.sae.org/14570/

Heck, Toyota Prius and Rav-4 Hybrid have it, some high end German cars (I think Mercedes has a car with Steer-by-Wire even now).  GM, Honda, Ford hybrids have it.  Some big trucks (18 wheelers) do as well.

No vacuum needed at all.

If they put it on the vehicle you're interested in would you pass on the vehicle because of it.

I think not.

Hey Paintor (OP) -   Success!  You sparked a conversation (pardon the pun) and caused us to reflect on technology!

Before we know it, they will be able to use those light emitting diode thingies in the vanity mirrors!

Well as an airline pilot I can say that we have TONS of responsibility that requires thought and intervention.  The automation is absolutely necessary so that we can focus on whatever is the task at hand.  We COULD NOT do our job without automation because the workload would be too high.  In the old days there were three pilots......now the are two and we are assholes and elbows........

The reason for electric assist on power steering is to increase efficiency. The less the motor has to do the less fuel it will consume. Replacing humans is just a byproduct. A tasty byproduct. Soylent Green is people

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
