Anyone Mount Their Own Tires?

Does anyone here mount their own tires? I saw some videos on YouTube with people manually mounting tires with pry bars. It really didn’t look that bad, I was thinking of trying it myself. Thoughts?

It is possible, but you run a risk of damaging the wheel and/or the tire.  Then you still have the problem of balancing.  Mount and balance isn't very expensive, why would you risk it?

^^^^ This

It's not terrible but I only do it on steel wheels on the farm as it doesn't matter how they look and they don't need balanced either.

I mount my own tires...on my zero turn and tractor. Wouldn't do it on my truck. One of those things I'd rather pay someone to do.

I have the Harbor Freight tire changer, only because the motorcycle tire attachment hooks to it.

I changed 4 tires on my Colorado, 15”, not a big job at all, with the right tools.

but as others said I still had to pay to have them balanced.

I think I’m not going to attempt due to the reasons that were listed above. Some places around here charge $25+ to mount and balance tires! This gets expensive when me and my wife both have sets of winter and summer tires for our cars. Luckily there is a Costco near by that does $10 a tire, appointments are usually 2 weeks out though.

Have you ever thought about buying an extra set of rims to keep your winter tires on?  It will be an upfront cost but that will keep you from having to unmount and remount tires on two vehicles twice a year.  I do change my own tires on everything I own unless I can get a good deal on a set of tires that include balancing which is easier to do these days compared to years ago.  I also own the cheap harbor freight tire changer and I used to use an old school balancer that had the bubble in the middle (still have it) but I now use beads in my motorcycle tires to balance them out and may try them on my truck tires when the time comes to change them.

I just went to Dunn Tire, $22 a tire mounted, balanced, installed, and torqued with a wrench not an impact, filled with nitrogen as well aaaand, free lifetime tire rotations for the life of the tires AAANNNDDD free puncture repairs. I mean, how you going wrong with that deal? Well worth the $80 something i paid.

I didnt buy my tires from there either, as long as they are brand new tires they will do this deal.

Guess you found your tire shop for life!

Next time your there you want to see if they’d be interested in opening up a shop in the middle of Iowa somewhere?

I mean I’d drive out there to get my rotates but by the time I’d get home it would be time to do it again...

We had a tire machine on the farm.  It kinda sucks, but not terrible.  I can't imagine doing it with just prybars.  Certainly not on the nicer wheels we all have.

Our machine won't work on these gangsters wheels that these trucks come with now, so I just pay someone to do it.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
