Painted Tow Hooks Or Not?

Recommended Posts

I wanted to change my toe hooks out for the chrome but didn’t want to spend over a $100 right now. Still regret not pulling them off my ‘08 when I traded it in. Anyway I painted the old ones I had sitting in the garage. What are yalls opion?  I know it’s ultimately what I want but I’m sitting on the fence. Getting the chrome is out for right now.

Depends on the look you're going for I'd say. I like the red and think it gives it kind of an off road racing truck appearance. However the black is much more clean and allows your eye to focus on the headlights and general front end more.

From the sound of it you want a cleaner more classy truck so I'd keep the black.

My dealer installed their "chrome package" on my truck prior to purchase. My least appreciated feature of this package is the chrome tow hooks.  If these hooks were actually needed to help me out of a ditch,  I'd hate to see what a chain would do to the chrome. A black hook can easily be touched up with any black paint.  I agree with Penguin VII, keep the hooks discrete so focus can be on the rest of your truck!

Thanks guys for the honest advice. I showed the wife and she is agreeing with y’all so I will be putting the black one back on. Maybe if I run across a good deal on the chrome I might give a try again.

The red goes with the GMC logo? I think color matched would look classier. But I hate settling for something eles sounds like you might to.

I’d check with your dealer see if they have any chromes they swapped out and will see cheap, the big Chevy dealer around here is usually the cheapest place to buy take off wheels/tires. Also if you got any truck accessories places around (somebody gets a bull guard) Put a ad on your local Craigslist or here in marketplace and see if somebody wants to swap your 2 pair for their 1 pair (this would be ideal for someone powder coating). Watch Ebay like a hawk for new take offs priced right then sell yours to recoup your cash.

Here’s a cheaper set listed. saves you 25 bucks

I had mine done. Colormatched tow hooks look nice, if they're for display only. I can't imagine pulling much of anything out with them, they'll scratch & chip fast. I think the ones you have on now look out of place due to the different shade of red. I'd say go maroon like your truck or go chrome/black.

I'm in the minority I guess, that red looks good on the maroon.  Goes with that center lower trim, and adds some pop to the truck.

I agree with newdude, does not look too bad. I have a set of the factory red ones that I am going to put on when I have time. Swapped out the black ones for chrome last year.

Well, I went and pulled off the red and put my black one back on. I will wait till I get the chrome ones like I originally wanted.

Have you thought about having your hooks chromed by a chrome plating shop. Maybe you could have it done for a decent price.

This is a good option over buying new.  The idea of chrome plated hooks is fine if they are used for decoration.  I would guess that most of us have never used these hooks for their intended purpose.  Another option if you want the chrome look and need to touch it up on occasion is this.  https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-7718830-Bright-Metallic-11-Ounce/dp/B000Z8DGXK    I have used this product to dress up rusty receivers and rusty trim pieces on my utility trailers.  However,  I prefer parts that can be touched up with my little can of black  Tremclad!
