Black Soot

Hey guys, for those of you with the 6.2l, how dirty is your exhaust? I have harsh black soot at the tailpipe and out the condensation hole on the muffler. I always run top tier premium (92-94 octane) gas.

So, is this pretty typical?

Yes, it is the nature of the beast running gasoline.  Now if you were running E85 then that would be gone.

My tail pipe on my camaro was always black running 93 Exxon fuel, when I used E85 it would stay clean.

Pretty normal. I gave up trying to to keep my Corsa dual tip clean. Im catless with just a Flowmaster pro series muffler, so mine is probably worse than most haha

I have other gas powered vehicles; this one seems to leave a lot more black crap, that's all. If this thing had a carburetor, I'd just assume it's running rich.

My 2014 looks the same way. When it was still under warranty I took it to the dealer and lead mechanic said that was normal. It still bothers me today when I wash the truck and see the muffler. I have tried E65 and I do like the way the truck behaves, esp the transmission.  But locally the only E85 is from a Spinx brand station (not Top Tier) but they do sell E85, pure gas, etc - the price for E85 is only $0.10/gal less than Regular, so the reduced miles per gallon for E85 does not make this a good buy. So I'll live with the sooty muffler.

Holy crap!

Yea,  my muffler weep hole area did get sooted up similar to yours.   I used to wash it and the other parts of the exhaust with an SOS pad every spring.   I just put an aftermarket muffler on,  I didn't pay attention if it has a hole or not.

Regarding the tail pipe... do you ever wash your truck or is that a several month period of build up? My tailpipe never looked like that.

I don't know if I'd wash my tailpipe and muffler, but I'd mention it to my service adviser next time I went in for service and make sure my concern was recorded into their system.  I know this is probably normal (common) but it does appear that your fuel/air mixture needs attention.

Normal.  DI do it a bit more than port injection, but I've seen plenty a 6.0 and other LS powered vehicles with carbon deposits all over the exhaust tips.

On the DI engines black soot is mainly emitted on start up and hard acceleration. You could just never shut the engine off and stop the (act a fool) stomping on the gas pedal and you would not have that deposit on your tailpipe Hahahahahaha

To clean that I like a kitchen nonabrasive scrub sponge and soap and water. Removes the black deposit without scratching up the exh pipe surface. A toilet brush works perfectly for the inside of the pipe. You should be able to make that look factory new in about 10 minutes max.

Its from the cleansing additives in gasoline. The dirtier it burns, the more additives it has. I used to think that shell gasoline was garbage because of how black my tail pipe would get.

^This. Higher compression ratios run richer to prevent detonation when under load.

Thanks guys. I figured that it was normal. Way too fun to stomp on it every now and again.

Adding a chrome tip would make it easier to clean as well.

My trailblazer is black after an hour of driving.  I have found spraying it with my favorite all purpose cleaner and then using SOS pads is the easiest way to keep it clean.  I tried polish and sealants with no improvement.

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
