2018 compared to 2014

My company got me a new work truck last week, a 2018 silverado.  Kinda strange since my last two company trucks were a 2015 and 2012 F-150 to be back in a work truck similar to my personal rig.  My company bids out to local dealerships (they buy dozens at a time) and we always get plain jane trucks.  Who ever put out the specs messed up and didn't mention a locker so my new truck does not have a G80 which sucks because I spend half my day driving off road but it is not the first time I had a company truck with an open rear end and I will get by (at least I got a nice Warren winch this time!).  The biggest difference I have found compared to my 2014 is how much better the transmission shifts!  My personal truck is the 5.3/6spd/3.42 gear and my WT is 5.3/6spd/3.08 gear but this WT shifts much more smoothly and more predictable.  Even though this is a base truck it did come with a 7 inch touch screen with the usb ports, bluetooth, apple and android car compatible.  The touch screen on this truck is 10x better than the 8 inch touch screen on my 14 in that it is more responsive and faster.  It also shows all the album art on the usb drive for my mp3's while my 14 shows about a quarter of the album art.  This truck also does not have any of the squeak and rattle problems that my 14 has been plagued with since I bought it new.  The 18 model also rides smoother but it came with plain shocks while my 14 has the stiffer rancho's on it.  Just another reason that I will never buy a first year release of a vehicle again!

A side note that I think is strange is that my 18 work truck does not have a key fob and the 4x4 shifter is on the floor!  Nothing wrong with it, just thought that all vehicles came with a key fob these days and most trucks have knobs instead of shifters for 4x4.  My last two ford base model trucks had key fobs and knob style 4x4 shifters.  I also had to remove the front air dam the next day, truck was nearly on the ground in the front due to the weight of the brush guard and winch combined with the ridiculously low air dam.

Well you're going from the first model year of what has got to go down as the WORST run of GM trucks mechanically in history. So you're comparing a truck that mechanically/quality/reliability-wise is a straight POS to another new first run model year that while yet to confirm whether they're repeating the mechanical/quality it certainly LOOKS like a POS ahhahahhahhahaha

GM has failed me terribly. Even if these new trucks are a complete 180 from a quality/reliability standpoint I've already written them off b/c they're so damn ugly - and I also noticed immediately that these newer ones sit even LOWER to the ground w/ that chevy rake if its even possible. Things got the ground clearance of a small CUV

My question is why do you stay on this forum if GM has failed you? You should delete your account and move on.

He's not going first year to first year ... His company bought 18's
That's the last year of this generation.
So he's comparing the improvements.

Yeah I get that. What I'm saying is the "improvements" have yet to be vetted & its another first year truck, so if the OP is damning himself for biting on a first run new model then not sure why he's assuming this new version would change his mind & add "just another reason why I'll never buy a first year release of a vehicle again!" - get my point? How is a first model year WT convincing him not to buy a first model year vehicle again??! I don't get the logic unless I'm reading his post incorrectly but thats verbatim what he said.

Regardless - nice to hear they updated some stuff, but I'm sitting on the sidelines for a long time before I consider any new GM product again, I want to see how these new versions age....although like I already said my opinion (and many others) is that the redesign aesthetically is not an "improvement" its a step backwards.

to the other poster asking Why do I stay on this forum if I am ticked off @ GM? Well b/c I own a '15 SLT 4x4 6.2 outright & plan on driving it into the ground so considering the multitude of constant issues popping up I kinda need to come on here fairly regularly to stay up to date on what fixes (if any) there may be for these issues whether they come from aftermarket solutions or new dealer TSB's etc.

Pretty rational reason for coming back eh?

These trucks have been awful anyone who argues differently is a brand loyalist who doesn't want to face reality....I've already owned 2x2014's prior to my 2015 (had reasons why I went through those quickly first one traded back in @ 5k miles had gutless 3.08s 2nd got totaled - ALL HAD/HAVE ISSUES)

Tranny issues/failures, TC issues/failures, valve train issues, AFM issues, injector issues, AC condensor & entire system issues, vibration issues, media display issues, etc etc etc etc etc etc My near $60k vehicle w/ 35k miles left me stranded in the middle of upstate NY w/ my entire family/dog loaded up w/ cargo on a long road trip - STARTER WENT - I haven't been concerned about getting stranded on the load for a mechanical issue since I was driving a '94 VW jetta back/forth from MA to VA in college - and that thing had 250k on it and cost me a whopping $4k !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aside from being roughly 4 years newer and having "bugs" worked out ( well some of them anyway), a new transmission will ALWAYS shift better than

one with higher mileage regardless, especially with GM transmissions.

This has been the case with Every GM truck I have owned no matter what the model year or transmission.

Give it time and mileage. Your 18 work truck will eventually have some sort of clunk! :loser:

Don't agree with this.. My 2017 has been pretty flawless for the first 14 months/22K miles... I have no brand loyalty at all when it comes to buying a truck. I've owned Ford and Toyota trucks as well as my current Chevy.

My only vehicle loyalty is for my cars.. I'm a Volvo fanatic and have had one in my driveway for the last 26 years

The 7" is okay, I like the MyLink version 2.5 that is in the 2016-2018 over it and def. over the first two years of MyLink in the Silverado.

WT and LS trim both still get floor shift only that's no joke.  T1 2019 new trucks don't even offer a manual floor shift transfer case so 2018 is the last year for that.

You guys can add in fobs if you desire.  The TPM sensors run the same module as the remotes so a dealer can just go in and add key fobs.

I had a brand new 14 2wd Silverado LTZ that I just traded for an 18 Sierra SLT 4x4 Z71 with the 8 speed transmission. I honestly feel like my 14 was the better truck. The 6 speed transmission was silky smooth on the 14 and it never had the Chevy shake. I also noticed the infotainment system on the 14 had more features and the cup holders on the 14 were removable and there was a huge secret cubby under them great place to hide my gun( not removable on the 18). My 18 seems to have a slight case of the shakes and the transmission while not horrible is not nearly as good as the 14 was. My 18 also has more rattles than my 14 ever did.

Do you realize that 2018 is not a new model year and that it is the 2019’s. He bought a 2018 and back in 2016 is when GM did some slight modifications to this gen trucks.

These trucks do have issues and hopefully GM does get their act together or else they will be in the same boat they were in the early 2000s with mediocre quality that made a lot of people that enjoyed their brand run away to other brands.

I had a 2016 Colorado before getting my Silverado and even that thing had all kinds of issues that made no sense at all.

I think my 18 is a bit nicer than my 15 was,  but they are differently optioned.  I do like the 6.2 8 speed vs the 5.3 6 speed.  I like the 8 speed better than the 6 speed, not nearly as much hesitation on throttle tip in.  I don't like on the 18 is the fact that the movable foot pedals cannot be adjusted in gear like the 15 could, and as stated above, the cup holders do not come out of the console.  I lost my secret hiding place.  One other thing odd my Rough Country 2 1/2" front and 1" rear lift with the same brand and size tires (275/60-20 Hankook Dynapro AT-M) did not rub on my 15 non Z71, but I have rub at the ends of steering travel on my 18 Z-71.

I appreciate that your experiences may support this but mine are the opposite.  I've owned a sample of most GM and Ford 1/2 tons from the mid 1960's to 2000.  Since my 2000 Silverado, I've only owned GM's.  My 2015 has been the most reliable, comfortable and economical truck I've owned so far.  In 2014 GM made a huge advancement in the power and efficiency of their trucks and I think this will receive favorable recognition in the history books!

I had a 14 till 70k miles with no issues. I now have an 18. Both 5.3/6sp/3.42. I think the 18 shifts smoother, and there is no v4 flapper noise. That’s about the only thing I’ve noticed. It is odd that on the 14 I could rewind the music/radio and 18 doesn’t have that option.

I use my radio rewind daily. Love that feature!

Nice, I feel the same about my 18 vs my old 14.  Pretty nice so far.   The floor shift has always been there for the WT unless opted otherwise.  Think of the good side its probably going to be a damn dependable truck other than the open Diff.

LOL this guy bashing GM still cannot figure out which year is what and what your post is even about. Kinda lost credibility there fa sho!
