I would like to get others thoughts on the startup noise of my 19' 6.2 to see if it sounds normal. The noise I'm concerned about is the noise towards the end after the truck has started. It sounds like a rattling / grinding noise ( hard to describe ). I've got close to 2,500 miles on my truck and just started noticing this noise. It only has happened 3-4 times. It doesn't do it every time but sometimes it's louder and longer then others. When I first noticed the sound I had been driving for about 10 minutes, came to a complete stop the auto start / stop turned the truck off and when it turned the truck back on I heard the sound. It was quite loud and noticeable the first time it happened. I've also had it happen when I've remote started the truck. Thoughts?  IMG_5347.mp4

Thanks

Although my truck is a 17' it makes the exact same noise on a cold start first thing in the morning. I know your truck has a all new motor for the 19's , but I have read where it is normal for the 14-18 model truck's. Yeah I don't really like it either but they say it is normal.

It almost sounds like the starter is sticking open and is getting overdriven by the engine once is started.  I have a 2019 6.2 and it hasn't made that noise at all.  Does it happen more when cold or after the truck is warmed up to operating temperature?

It may be your Direct Injection Pump, during start-up

Almost sounds like the old Bosh mechanical diesel injector pumps during engine start..

Do you hear a slight ticking sound when engine is running in same area as pump,, as this is part of pressurization..

My old Vortec 5.7 never made this sound...

dphel27,

That sound is the Oil Pump.

This is a common "normal" sound especially in colder weather on the K2 trucks.

At least from the sound of your clip, my '14 Sierra does the same thing and others describe it as normal.

Sounds like the oil pump rasp on start that began with the launch of the K2 LT based engines in 2014.  Having heard the clip, I'm going with normal.

Oil Pump Cold Start Rrrrp or Rasp

The oil pump design has changed from a gerotor gear type pump to a two speed vane type pump for fuel economy reasons. At temperatures at or below 32°F (0°C) or when the engine has been sitting for a few hours, it is possible to have air enter the pump through normal oil drainback. Upon startup the owner may hear a short Rrrrp or Rasp coming from the front of the engine. It is most often heard during a remote start. There is nothing wrong with the oil pump or oil system. No repairs should be attempted for this condition.

Hi, Dan. I understand how frustrating this startup noise concern must be for you. If you’re thinking about visiting your servicing GM dealership about your situation, I would be happy to work alongside them, to provide an additional layer of support. I hope to hear from you soon.

My truck does like the video on start up. Not a 19 but pretty much the same.  It's not annoying since it's only on startup, but if it did in on auto stop/start events it may get annoying.

I wouldn’t say “normal” my 18 6.2 has never made anything close to what is being described. I can hear (well used to hear but have the Borla ATAK now) the injectors if I’m outside the truck...can’t hear them inside at all.

I have a 2019 GMC AT4 6.2 with a noise at start-up that sounds like a bearing in one of the pulleys or belt tensioner is bad.  I noticed it around the 3,000 mile mark. It is worse during cold starts and it is almost a squealing noise.  I took it in to the dealership who had it for almost a week, and finally determined the noise was coming from the catalytic converters and there was nothing they could do about it.  They even put the truck up on the lift and had me come in to listen to see if it was the same noise I was talking about. And yes the noise was actually coming from the catalytic converters.  I guess this is normal but it really sucks!  My 2017 Chevy Silverado that I traded in for the AT4 did not make any noise,  just saying!  Stan S.
