Ideas to increase half ton fuel range

I want a bit more fuel range so I can tow long distance more comfortably.  It appears a larger fuel tank is just not an option and would be incredibly expensive...although cheaper then a 6.0 2500Hd ;)

Is looking at doing two 20L jerry cans but can’t find an attractive way to secure them in my bed ( I’m sure I could figure it out and rig it).  That would be a super easy way to get 10 gallons of emergency fuel if I drive past a gas station or get stuck somewhere.

This is also interesting but the refueling siphoning method looks awkward.  (Titan Sidekick 15 gallon #5040015)

Anyone have some out of the box ideas?  I want to carry 10-20 extra gallons.

Put your jerry cans in front of or behind the wheel well.

Bungee cord to the side of the bed.

Drill holes in the bed liner lip to fasten the bungee cords to.

I do this.

Works for me.

There are a few options, depending on your needs/wants;

One option is a front mount bed storage boxes that have built in fuel tanks. Also fuel tank only boxes that mount across the front of the bed. My father used this method on his diesel 3500. He had it rigged up such that all he had to do was flip a switch to use the auxiliary tank. One advantage he liked was fueling up where fuel was cheaper + the greatly extended range.
Also, I think you can buy smaller saddle tanks that fit in front of the wheel wells inside the box, on either side.

Or you could just get a transfer tank and plumb it into your tank.

Tapping into the fuel system with an auxiliary tank will set a SES and the fuel gauge will not work until error code is removed. Friend of mine did this and tried different methods with no success.

Would it be because the high rpms/speed and increased fuel?  I don’t do this, but I believe a lot of people fuel their vehicles at the pump and causes no codes being thrown.

Im going to go the fuel can route since it seems the most obvious.  If I fabricate some sort of attachment I will update this thread.

Its because the PCM does a random vacuum test for  fuel tank vapors and when it cant pull  specific vacuum reading in a certain time it thinks tank has a vacuum leak.

Even with a switched valve?
No one would possibly plumb a transfer tank without one...?

Yes even with a switch valve. If the valve is open when the vac test is done the PCM will set a code.

I can’t imagine anyone doing this while the truck is running.

The truck is gonna act like a regular fill-up if done with any common sense (truck off/parked), don’t you think?

I know of lots of people who fuel their vehicles while engine is running.  Someone told me there is no evidence that it is a hazard and the reason gas stations tell u to turn it off is to prevent Vehicles from driving into things.

Im still paranoid tho lol

I can count on one hand in thirty plus years the times I've turned my motor off to refuel.

The computer would detect a refueling event and not set a code when the transfer tank dumps fuel into the main tank.

Wavian Jerry Cans are the best, blue and red cans in the photos above.  Get the real pour spout, not the government one too.  They're awesome.
