First oil change

Recommended Posts

I like using full synthetic oil because its 3-4bucks more in comparison with synthetic blend. I change my oil every 5k and drive at the most 20k a year. That is 16 dollars more a year to have the full synthetic. On a 40k truck and living in Santas land I can make peace with that.

Oil filter I usually use the oem, then mobile one then Fram depends on the availability.

Just seen my post you are right the extra guard is the cheapest one. I bought the most expensive one ultra synthetic. Fram should consider their naming lol extra guard sounds the best but I guess it is not. My bad

Whew, scared me with the orange filter of death.

The Fram Ultra is actually a great filter. On par with the Mobil 1 and better than the AC by a mile.

First oil change will be done at the dealer (2500km) and then I’ll do the rest with most likely Mobil 1 and AC Delco filters. I’ll use the oem filters to make sure they don’t have a reason to reject a claim.

Everyone saying they’re using 5-w30, the manual says 0W20 for the 5.3/6.2 engines. Is there something I should know about?

No, just many people on the forum are still living in the past as far as viscosity selection and oil change intervals.

I have used Supertech 5w 30 from Wal-Mart for the past 25,000 miles. If i want 0.000001 better MPG i will switch back to 0w 20.

Changed my oil at 4k, it was pretty dark. Think going to do it every 3750 moving forward and try stave off the oil consumption issues. Mobile 1 oil. Will rotate the tires too since doesn't cost me anything but 5 minutes of life. Most new vehicles have gone away from trans dip sticks because the fluid level is very temperature sensitive. It would give false readings, guys would overfill the thing. I was talking to a chevy tech, he said the 8sp trans fluid was $90 a quart, so won't be doing a $1000 trans service early?

13.00 a quart on Amazon Dexron 6 HP

Could it maybe have something to do with the engine design and DFM more so than fuel mileage? That would be my guess.

0-20 so I figured I use what GM recommend. As far as super tech i seen a review and appearantly it surpasses Mobil 1.  It is made by warren distribution and they been making oil since 1922. I will be using them for my next oil change.

It's a bit more than that. Especially if it improves the AFM 'On' time. The 0W* will have more effect than the *W20. Of course if you have the AFM tuned off....have a nice day.

This is from 2020 manual, but afaik the 2019 is the same.

Specification
Use full synthetic engine oils that meet the dexos1 specification.
Engine oils that have been approved by GM as meeting the dexos1 specification are marked with the dexos1 approved logo.

Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade engine oil for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines.
Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade engine oil for the 2.7L L4, 4.3L V6 and 6.6L V8 engines.

Everyone should be using 'full synthetic' for this generation.

This.   Run what the manual suggests unless GM has released a TSB that supersedes what the manual says.

I noticed amsoil 0w-20 does not have the dexos approved logo on the bottle, but is a full synthetic.  Concerns?

    • I have thought an EV might have some practical value in extending the life of the ICE members of ones fleet. Now....I'm convinced of it. I've been letting my better half access Raven (Mitsubishi Mirage) for her needs while Dizzy has been in the shop. Being the fuel freak I am and given the fact Raven is capable of over 60 mpg in clean air on a warm day I was taken back by the wife's ability to take a car that had used a half a tank of gas that to that point had returned a value of 57 mpg and return in with a decimating 51 mpg for that same tank in that same day in a 15 mile round trip of short hop errands and a stop in the drive through at Micky D's.  😱   Trust me on this. It would take the remainder of that tank driven on the highway to return that tank to just 54 mpg. This is not a Mitsubishi issue. This is an ICE issue that is magnified in vehicles capable of such high fuel economy values. On a percentage basis your 1500 does the same thing. Short hopping an ICE consumes a good deal more fuel and in doing so provides zero additional useable outputs. That entire volume of fuel is wasted in diluting the cylinder walls oil films, creating crankcase moisture and acid content and the resultant wear.    Enter the SLATE. All of that is avoided and the ICE's advantage in range and made useful at reduced wear for your ICE!   Kind'a cool.
    • Back in the day people would buy cars based on performance. The charger posted does 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. And it’s fully loaded.  It has a decent warranty and will fit most anyone’s needs. Remember the original Hemi? 90 day warranty. 25K mini truck or that car? I’d go with the car. It wouldn’t fit my perimeter. If I could just talk my wife out of her Genesis. It would be perfect for her.
    • Let's pivot this back. Someone said they wanted pictures.   Even better, there's already video. Pre-prod prototypes are already on the road and they're letting the press drive them.   JerryRigEverything did a good review. I really enjoy his content and EV adventures, so I was thrilled when he had the chance to review a Slate:
    • The Charger EV was stillborn. Wrong car at the wrong price for Dodge's intended audience. Now at a good price with fire-sale discounts, and still not selling, it's still very much the wrong car. Again, Dodge's intended audience. I believe a lot of Stellantis' EV blunders were all under Tavares' regime at Stellantis...the board convinced him to move on. Neat car, just wasn't received on the level that would sustain mass production.   Dodge is headed in a better direction for its core business. I didn't think there was anything left to get excited about re: the Durango after its 15 year run, but they're just now releasing a 392 version that should price out in the low 40's. Nicely done. I'm not sure I would touch anything Stellantis makes with a 10' pole these days, but the Durango is still mostly parts designed like 3 parent companies ago so maybe it's still OK?
