Will a new 2500 HD fit through a 7 ft tall std garage door?

Recommended Posts

I have a question about the overall height of the new Silverado 2500 HD. I currently drive a 2018 Silverado 2500 HD and I"am going to trade it for a new 2020 but i am concerned about the overall height to fit in my garage. I only have a standard 7 ft overhead door and the dimensions seem to be getting pretty close looking at the new specs. The shark fin antenna on my '18 clears fine with about 4"'s of clearance. The roof height on my '18 is 78" plus the shark fin antenna and i have the 18" wheels on it. The spec from GM for the 2020 is  80" and i'am guessing plus the shark fin also. i am wondering is the spec measured with the standard 17" wheels? I have measured overall heights on the 17",18" and 20" new wheels/tires and the dimensions with the 18"s and 20"s will make it a close fit, a little too close for comfort with measurements. I'am wondering if anyone who already has a new 2020 with the 18" or 20" wheels knows if it will fit through std 7 ft garage door? and if the 20's will , by how much? I'am trying to avoid a visit to the dealership and a test drive home to try it .      Thanks any info is appreciated

On a side note to this my antenna on my 2017 scrapes the paint off my garage door frame driving in and out of the garage.   I was concerned my 2020 was going to be even worse.  I looked at a new 2020 yesterday and noticed they decreased the length of the antenna, looks to be roof high only.  So even though the truck sits higher, my antenna probably won’t scrape now.

Just took one home for a test fit.  Denali 3500SRW Duramax on order, should be here in a few months.  It clears the door by a few inches...  Only have 1.5 inches in the front and 1.5 inches in the back.  Backup camera for the win.

Thanks for the responses and picture. 1-1/2"  is great ,  trying to get a idea by measurements i actually thought it may be closer. Just will have to  keep the snow off of the driveway.     thanks again for the help

My 1500 with Trailboss lift fits fine with a std 7ft garage door. I was worried at first but it fit fine

Ryan B.

2020 2500's are higher than the 'lifted' 1500's.

According to gm,

2020 Lifted 1500 crew (Trailboss and AT4) = 78.23" high

2020 2500 crew std box = 79.82" high

AT4 2500 is not 'lifted'

This pic is at my parent's garage with a 7' door, but not sure the exact height. I have the 20" wheels which have 34.1" tall tires. The 18" wheels have 33.2" tall tires. The 265/70R17 tire is only 31.6" tall. So the smaller tires would definitely help lower the truck height.

Here is a 2500HD AT4 with 20" wheels that I borrowed from my dealer to check for fit.  I have just enough clearance to give me confidence that the 3500HD AT4 I have on order will fit.  ?  My 2015 2500HD Denali easily fits...and I can close the garage door, open the tailgate and have plenty of room to walk all the way around the truck.  This new one is a much larger truck.
