C7A         GVWR, 10,000 lbs. (4536 kg)

 

On Base Sierra - Available to all models with L8T Gas Engine. L5P Diesel requires TK20*53 or T*20*43 models. L5P Diesel Not Available with TC20743 or any Regular Cab models.
 On SLE - Available to all models with L8T Gas Engine. L5P Diesel requires TK20*53 or T*20*43 models. L5P Diesel Not Available with TC20743 or any Regular Cab models. When ordered with (ZW9) pickup bed delete, includes hard touch instrument panel-top pad.
On SLT - Available to all models with L8T Gas Engine. L5P Diesel requires TK20*53 or T*20*43 models. L5P Diesel Not Available with TC20743. When ordered with (ZW9) pickup bed delete, includes hard touch instrument panel-top pad.
On Denali - Not available with (YF5) or (NE1) emissions.

First letter T= gmc,  C = chev
K = 4wd

C = 2wd

20 = 2500 

53 = long or std box double cab

43 = long or short crew 

The * in the 5th spot would be 7 if standard box and 9 if long

 

The other GVWR's use 'ref only' rpo codes, assigned based on truck configuration. 

 

examples:. 

JGF    GVWR, 10,650 lbs. (4831 kg)
Any trim - Included and only available with CK20743 model and (L8T) 6.6L V8 gas engine with 18" or 20" wheels or CK20943 and (L8T) 6.6L V8 gas engine with 17" wheels.

 

C4M    GVWR, 9900 lbs. (4490 kg)
Base trim or LT (sierra and SLE in GMC) - Included and only available with CC20903 model and (L8T) 6.6L V8 gas engine with 17" wheels. 

Other trims not available

I believe you need option code cgo vs c7a.  CGO goes with 20" tires where c7a is the other sizes.

Order guide says C7A is not available on Denali trim.

Did a little more digging.

For 2019 model, C7A was freeflow, and 10,000lb, required L5P and crew cab on any sierra trim.

 

For 2020, C7A showed the restrictions in previous post.

So how are so many business owners in California driving new Denali 2500? I know their businesses are buying the trucks for the right offs

And none of the dealers in California have any clue what I’m talking about so it seems like this isn’t actually becoming an issue.

It's only going to become an issue if something happens. My business owns the truck and I have a DOT# but registered my truck as non-commercial in Minnesota. Still though, when i hookup to my 14k# flatbed trailer and go get a large part for work technically i would need those numbers.    No one will bother me though........ until something happens.

Did you actually put the numbers on your truck Or you just have the actual number in your records

So I'm not 'knowledgeable' about Cali DMV rules, but, I had a quick look at their site, and the above page, at section .0190 Weight Fees for Commercial Vehicles With a Declared Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 10,000 Pounds or Less (Effective 01/01/2002) (CVC §9400)

 

Any chance you are mixing GVWR and GWR?

 

GVWR is the amount the vehicle and load can weight.

GVR is just the weight of the vehicle

 

(and GCWR is weight of truck+trailer+loads)

 

A quick look suggests to may that the fees just depend on what the GVR of the truck (ie what it actually weighs, before loads are added) rather than the GVWR which is what it is rated to weigh when loaded.

 

I'm assuming you don't pull a trailer, so the 26,000 pound commercial requirement isn't an issue. (or if you do, the trailer is small enough the the GCWR (rating for when truck and trailer are both at maximum load)

 

(Maybe I missed something in your explanation , or meed to spend more time at the DMV site)

@kfroese I did not put them on my truck. too much bs associated with it. my business is a trucking company so i have the numbers and all that if ever forced to put them on

I’m more concerned with the dot regulations, not the ca dmv stuff. Didn’t want to deal with dot and any extra requirements they have just because I want a more powerful truck. I’m just amazed the dealers don’t know what I’m talking about yet they tell me 90% of their business for these trucks is contractors.

@Dan Forsythedid it automatically send you dot stuff when you bought the truck or did you have to file yourself? I’m wondering if most guys just let it go knowing that it won’t be an issue

My dot# is over 30 years old, Nothing happens automatically. In MN where I’m at we have the option to register as commercial or non-commercial. I registered as non-commercial since 98% of the time I’m not using it for business purposes that would qualify for DOT. I use the diesel to plow and pull my boat, 5th wheel or car hauler.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
