Downshifts 2 gears

On my 2017  4.3  6 speed  Silverado when I am going 60 mph and put the selector in M the M shows 4 and the truck downshifts to 4th gear from 6th.  On my

2011 GMC when I put the selector in M at the same speed it goes into M6 thus staying in the same gear,

Seems to me it is hard on everything to go 2 gears down at any speed.  Don't understand GM's reasoning for this.

First off why are you running 60 in 6th and feel you need to put it M?

And 2nd, all the 14+ trucks do what you’re experiencing.

A little off topic, but my 2017 says L, not M. Is there a difference?  I've never tried shifting into L while moving, so not sure what gear it would shift into

The 6L80e should say M and if it's an 8 speed it will say "L". If I'm wrong you can correct me.

It’s not only GM, my Camry drops to 4Th if I go to manual mode.

Learn this word well....slip...anytime the trans is doing some management of the gears or speed it slips also with things like afm and fuel shutoff. They need the trans load reduced when it reconnects. We data log trans slip, demand, output shaft, and many more to see why it slips and track that down and retune for it.
There are also different patterns based on tow, hot, and just drive.
Many people like you ask for tune to be more like manual and hold higher before shift or tow. And don't like the down shift more then one.
