loveusa
Hey Guys My truck has 10k miles and since I bought the truck I heard like a Ticking Clock noise under the engine, must of the time is when the engine is cold, whent to the dealer like 3 times and they supposedly cant hear anything. I am getting frustrated every time when I turn on the engine and hear that noise, anyone can have an idea what that can be?
Thomas0920
Not sure about this but if you can hear it...why can't the dealer? I would try to resolve this before the warranty expires.
Minnvmax
Fuel injector? Mine makes noises too. I consider them all normal so far. They are more prominent with the quiet exhaust.

garagerog
If you have the 5.3 it may be piston slap, especially if you're just hearing it when the engine is cold. Although I haven't heard of this as much on the newer 5.3's, it was quite common on the older ones such as in the L33 in my 2005. Apparently it's due to the short skirt piston design, no real cause for concern, just don't drive it like you stole it until the oil warms up. Belo
piston slap that i also have on my 09 pontiac g8. iirc, it's something to do with where the oil sits relative to the pistons and is mostly common on a real cold start and/or parked on an incline. It should go right away and if it doesn't you have a potential serious mechanical issue on your hands. GM has been adamant that it's normal and not to be concerned, but I think a lot of us are still troubled by the sound... so far my G8 has almost 10 years and 70k miles on it without issue though. *knocks on wood*
Bizar
Mine does the same thing. The dealership said it was fine.

Zeker
Mine just started doing that since it's been cold. At least I haven't heard it before now. One reason why I may hear it more so now is I remote start it in the morning to warm it up.

Something people need to keep in mind, these trucks are extremely quiet in stock form. My old 5.3 cant be heard over the exhaust on startup unless it is bitter cold, but I know its making all the same old sounds at 190K as it did when new. It is a 2001 and the way I tamed the piston slap was to go from a 5-30 to a 10-30 oil. This lets the oil cling to the piston skirt a little better and it wouldn't rattle unless I left it sit for a week or so.
nichos
There's another thread on here, where the user has it in writing that GM acknowledges this as an issue, but they have no fix for it. See this reply to the thread: I wonder if this is something we should start documenting.

Watch the whole video. you will hear the ticking/knocking. It was diagnosed as a lifter issue that they have no fix for
