Need help for Reliably Turboing my Silverado

Recommended Posts

I want to turbo my soon be mine 05 2500hd, and I mostly need this for better towing but the extra power would be nice as well. I'm going to get new fuel pump, oil return, new intercooler and pipes, etc and I'm looking to like maybe 500hp out of the 6.0. Any advice for extra parts for reliability? I dont want to go crazy, this will be my daily driver.

Talk to Randeez over at the TahoeYukon or PerformanceTrucks forums.  He's one of several that have done it or are doing it.

Trick Turbo has kits for the half tons and most of the parts will go straight onto a 3/4 ton truck. Likely the downpipe with the exhaust needs work. You could contact them if you wanted a kit or to ask questions about fitment.

If you're making it yourself, get a quality turbo so you don't have issues. Trick Turbo also sells just the turbo manifold too.

Do not skimp on brand of fuel pump and make sure the injectors you purchase are good name brand stuff too. Cheap injectors are cheap for a reason, they don't last as long and often never come with proper data for tuning.

You will want an aftermarket transmission cooler and I suggest some sort of shift kit for the transmission.

The engine itself will have no problem making 450-500hp on a mild amount of boost but you always run the risk of hurting something. Going with forged pistons would be the ideal route. I highly suggest doing better valve springs because of the boost and doing the tunnion upgrade to the factory rockers. Both of those are relatively cheap to do and give you way better peace of mind.

Ring gap on these is really tight and more the issue than the pistons being hypereutectic.  I just built a 2015 model L96 for a guy who is turbo'd and this engine with 50000 miles on it had around 14 thou gap on the top compression ring. Any amount of boost sustained for a period of time would butt that gap and take the top of the piston off.

I always suggest dual springs for boost.... you don't always need super high seat load so buy accordingly but dual have better control at the same load than a single spring.
