Paint Flaws

Anyone else experiencing issues with their paint? New 2020 Denali Carbon Pro and the front passenger side fender has two weird horizontal runs in the paint. They are difficult to see unless you're looking at the panel in person and at the right angle, but there is definitely a manufacture defect present. Dealer has "diagnosed" the issue and will repaint the fender under warranty. Worst part is that the whole truck has been coated in Ceramic Pro and that panel will need to be re-done. Dealership says GM has declined covering the costs associated with the re-application of the ceramic coating, but I'm still waiting to hear back from customer care with an official response. Pretty disappointing for the cost of these trucks. Not sure why the quality control would even release the truck like that.

It's hard to tell from the pic...did you notice that before the ceramic coating?

I would maybe take it back to who did the ceramic coating and see what they think. Sometimes ceramic coating has what detailers refer to as high spots. It kind of looks like a smear or paint imperfection.

I know paint matching has come a long ways, but I'm always worried that a paint won't match. I see it all the time driving around. That's why I would check with the detailer first...my opinion

Or if you are that anal about paint how you didn't catch it before signing for it? Either way dealer is taking care of it and they should cover the coating (though how much could it be for one fender). Lesson learned for next time, happens to all brands, even the expensive German ones when you have machines and humans assembling something...

It’s possible the panel was damaged in transit/factory and repainted before you bought it. Happens more than you think. They do not have to disclose it.

A repaint may not only match in color but in texture (orange peel). A repaint will have trash, possible runs and flaws and will be wet sanded and buffed and you'll probably see a difference in the next over factory painted panel. It may be flatter and smoother than factory after sanded and buffed.  It's gonna be hit and miss. May come out good and may not. I can't see it in your pic. Think about leaving it alone. Keep us posted.

It was the detailer who noticed it and brought it to my attention. Unfortunately, this was after he had coated the fender. But it became more apparent after the paint was corrected and the ceramic coating was applied. At that point, the paint was much more enhanced and every little flaw becomes noticeable. I know that makes it sounds like it was possibly caused by the ceramic coating application. However, there is clearly too much paint in these areas. That's not how ceramic coatings work. Like Whipped500 has stated, high spots in ceramic looks more like a smear (think wax that has been left on), not raised spots that can easily be felt by touch. And this was also a very reputable installer who has done tons of coating work in the past. The rest of the truck looks incredible and the dealer isn't even questioning the fact that there is an issue with the paint.

There is always a chance that something happened to the truck at some point along the way and the fender was repainted or at least re-cleared, but the orange peel matches the rest of the truck perfectly so I feel it is less likely the case here. I wish you could see it in person as it's very unusual and pictures cannot capture it.

For the guys that say it's just a truck, we are very different people. I believe for $83K (CAD), the truck should be delivered with few to no flaws.

Repaint will not last as long nor be exact. This is not an exotic car and painted the same as the base models. They all have some paint defects. May be trash or orange peal or I even have a white dot on mine But has clear over it.

Totally agree, just because it's a truck doesn't mean the finish should be lesser than any other new vehicle?

I totally agree. And this is a Denali Carbon Pro. That would approaching $80,000 CDN. I would be pissed...

Unless it’s REALLY noticeable I would leave it alone. Factory paint it always best. What if it doesn’t match?

Yea I have a good friend for many years who's had a body shop for 30+ years and I hang around there a good bit.  It's hit and miss with match and matching texture and orange peel especially after wet sanding and buffing.  I've seen some that couldn't tell it was repainted and some that could.
