GMC Accidentally slipped into 4 wheel drive

I was towing my 24' boat with my 2014 GMC Sierra truck in 2 wheel high (I rarely use 4 wheel drive).

Unknowingly, it slipped into 4 wheel drive as I'm driving 65 + miles per hour on a dry highway.  I finally realized something was wrong as I noticed an unusual humming noise and I could smell oil burning?

A repair shop told me the truck was in 4 wheel drive and the front left gear oil must have overheated causing it to spew out (causing the burning oil odor)

Their inspection also revealed that the front left gear box bearing was damaged and loose; obviously damaged due to loss of gear oil!

The repair guy told me that he had seen this problem before!   Makes me wonder if it is a defect with the GMC?

Has anyone ever experienced, or heard, about this problem occurring with a GMC?

Read the first sentence

Not reading the rest

get rid of the cursive, it’s annoying to read, and it’s annoying to think about what kind of person would intentionally switch the font on a message board.

You sure you didn't rotate that knob instead of the headlights?  How many times a month do you engage the transfer case in all of its modes to keep things from getting stuck due to lack of use?

The only thing that can really be damaged would be the transfer case or CV shafts, if it was locked into 4x4 part time and you were driving on dry pavement for an extended period of time.  This does not all add up.
