I have a 2020 1500 SLT .  I also ordered the bed view camera that gave the trailer inputs above the trailer plug,  I also got the trailer camera when I ordered the truck.  Since my trailer was not in the area, I hooked a trailer light to a 7  to 4 pin plug.  The back trailer camera did work but not the interior trailer camera.  I found that that jack was not hooked up behind the bumper.  It was plugged into a blank plug that is strapped to the harness.  I am going to use the interior trailer input to run a front camera.  At least one trailer light needs to be hooked up so the truck will see that a trailer is connected.  Since the trailer light needs to be connected for the trailer camera to work, another problem exists.  Once the trailer is hooked up the rear sensors are disabled.  That also disables the side vehicle alert.  So I have to run a wire to a switch in the cab to turn the front camera by connecting and disconnecting the light that I simulates the trailer light.  In testing that process, I bought a small 12 volt led to be the mock trailer light.  I did not work like the trailer light I first tried.  It was not enough of a load so the truck could recognize it.  So I didn't have to put a larger light, I put a couple of small led's together and it works.  The 4 pin adapter is adequate to detect a trailer connected, just enough of a load from a trailer light.  I can switch the mock trailer light on and off that enables or disables the trailer cameras.  The 2019 may not need to be connected to a trailer but the 2020 must be.  Also the trailer camera I got with the truck will plug into either trailer camera port, just flip the plug 180 with the long pull tab the other direction.

George thank you for the insight that helps. So now I know that the 4 pin is adequate but might need an extra load to see if it detects it. I cannot think of anything I could add to my trailer to consume power. Any ideas?

in Joe's case he is getting the trailer connection because it asked which trailer and would go thru the light test and alternate the different lights flashing in a certain order.  If you are not getting the trailer to be recognized there also may be a bad ground.  Some trailers have there lights grounded to the frame and not the negative wire in the harness.  You could try a non led trailer clearance light between 1 and 3 on the plug.  1 is the odd pin  (uncovered).  If you had the emergency flashers going, when you connect the light to 1 and 3, It will not work immediately.  The system senses that there is something connected before the light outputs are activated.

George whenever I connect my trailer the truck detects it and it asks me to chose the profile and all. I tried to set my lights to ON instead of Auto. I also turned on the light inside the trailer but none of that worked. I am just thinking about returning it. Which is really unfortunate as it is such a great feature

Is your truck a 1500 2020 slt or denali?  Mine is a 2020 1500 SLT.  I noticed that the preview on the trailer apps really doesn't work.  When I first hooked up the camera is asked to load the camera apps.  Did yours ask for that.  Once that loaded, the preview didn't recognize a camera but when you went to home then pressed camera, the trailer camera icon was lit white.  the aux trailer camera was grey.  If the icon is white then the camera is recognized and if comes up as a blank screen then something is wrong with the camera.  Looking at all the other comments, there may be a different camera type involved.  I know that the 2018 and pre 2018 are a different camera type.  They require power leads as well as the video leads for the camera to work.  My 2020 camera only requires the video coax, the power comes over the same cable.  This is at least true with the Trailer camera and the denali front camera that I got.

With the trailer plug hooked up and the camera plugged in, have you gone to the trailer setup, selected a trailer or guest trailer and hit camera preview?   Also remember that I had the interior trailer input not working and had to plug in the wire from the harness.  The Trailer plug worked, but the Interior trailer plug was not hooked up. You can see the jack and plugs above the trailer light plug under the bumper.

Mine is a 2019 1500 SLT

And I will check if it lit white that will help me understand whether something is wrong with the camera. The trailer app never asked me about a camera I even tried to set up a new one but that did not change anything.

Hello,  I just purchased a 2020 GMC 2500HD Denali and am attempting to purchase the Trailering camera (84580657) but have been told by the dealership that it is not available.  After reading over this thread, I'm curious if GMC has decided to suspend selling this part until they resolve some of the problems being discussed here.  Thanks for all this info as it helps me better understand the problem I'm facing.  I sure hope GMC figures out a solution soon.

Joe, did you ever solve this and get your trailer camera to work?  I have the same situation as you originally described with a 2019 Sierra SLT factory equipped with the Trailer Camera Package and the same PN camera purchased OTC as a part.  I will not mount it on my Airstream until I'm sure it works, but would love to have the feature, just like shown in all the commercials.  I think I've tried everything mentioned to make the system work except pushing the wire in from the back of the receptacle.  I also get the black box where the camera should be.  Similar to your experience dealerships are no help as they are also in the dark.  I've considered calling OnStar to see if they can help wondering if a software update is required.  Any update would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having that exact problem, rear camera not working. But it was working last year when we initially installed it. After getting our trailer from winter storage, now it's not working at all. So frustrating not to find anything in the internet that might fix this issue.

I have a 2020 3500 Denali. Got the camera about 6 months ago. Installed it and it works fine for 6 months. This weekend, it stopped working. I troubleshoot it and messed around with it for a whole day. Nothing works. The only thing that I did is last week I took my truck to the dealership to check out a check engine light that just showed up. They replaced the fuel sensor because it was bad. I don’t know if that had any correlation to the camera not working but that’s what happened. Right now, my camera doesn’t work and it worked 2 weeks ago.

I too am at my wits end. Ordered a camera, 84580657, from a GM parts warehouse, that initially was erratic. Sometimes connected, sometimes connected with no camera option in the camera app, sometimes not recognized at all. Eventually got ANOTHER camera from the dealership (who know absolutely nothing about this option). New camera was 85004154. It shows connected, but no video, and not option in the camera app (camera is greyed out). I've checked plugs, and they are connected, and I've tried every combination of plugin procedure known to man. I'm of the understanding that for the basic trailer camera package without invisible trailer, all you have to do is connect the trailer via 7-way and plug the camera in(?). I did this to test camera, and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to work. I don't want them any where near my RV in light of their ignorance of the system.  I too would appreciate ANY guidance to make this feature work, since the dealership charged me $250 for the option on the window sticker. Thanks.

Digging up an old topic I know but thought I'd share some info...

Recently purchased a 2021 Sierra 1500 SLT that has the HD trailer package. It came with the trailer camera part number 84946379 which must have came from the factory with the truck because the VIN is also printed on the label.

When I first plugged it in all I got was a black box with no image and thought maybe the camera was bad. After reading through the owners manual there is a section for setting up the trailer in the trailer app on the infotainment unit. I did my measurements then inputted them into the trailer setup section, afterwards I tried the camera again and it was working as designed.

Not sure if that was indeed the fix but it's working so I thought I'd share. Also maybe related and maybe not to those that said theirs was working but stopped, in the back of the manual it states that GMC and On-Star periodically download updates and they may cause some information to be lost which needs to be reinstalled. Mine did an update the other day then afterwards my wireless Car play stopped working so I went in today, removed then re-paired my phone and now wireless Car Play works again... possibly if you had you trailer setup then an update was installed it may have taken out your setup.

Just throwing darts hoping to hit something...

I was told that the truck had to have the software on the truck for the camera to work the top plug must be to separate plugs that says left and right they open up separately the 7 pin is on the bottom. Had mine at the dealership to have it install on my enclosed trailer and they couldn’t do it been waiting for a while to see if the software is on the truck they said you can’t just change the plug.If anyone find out please let me know it was one of the reason I brought the truck

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
