MAF location on the S&B isn’t great, especially for a no tune intake.

Other then the GM/ tune update I’d say Rotofab has the best product

That’s someone with the S&B. I’ve also seen the same type of complaints and CELs with the open lid AFE one. Maybe it’s not a widespread problem, no clue. But it happens.

Even the GM CAI tells you to turn off the air filter life monitor using your steering wheel controls after install

My point is, as he said, it’s still throwing warnings with the monitor off. The truck doesn’t like what it’s seeing from some of these intakes that are designed with only air flow, sound or appearance in mind.

7,000 miles into my Roto-Fab. Not a single code or check air filter message. I didn’t even have to turn the monitor off. Is it still accurate? Probably not. But it tells me this intake can play nice within the stock tuning and not cause a bunch of quirks.

Your fuel mileage goes down with a CAI.  Because you put your foot in it harder, because it sounds louder.  That's about it.

Sounds good to me.  Sometimes SPG (Smiles Per Gallon) is more important than MPG.

I have 2019 AT4 Carbon Pro with 6.2L - came with cat back, but not the CAI - so I added the GM OEM one - it came with a tune to adjust for the flow of CAI and factory cat back exhaust - per GM 15 hp and 9 ft. lb. of torque increase - likely not enough to feel - but you can hear it and it sounds great - and every little bit helps!   5.3L has similar bump with CAI, cat back and tune.  With just cat back you get about 10hp per gain with 5.3l.

 

I would say the CAI is worth it just for how nice it  looks under the hood.  And you can get it on internet for well below $625 list and then have dealer install and add tune.

Where the torque-beast L87 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque was previously only available in the top-tier 2019 Silverado and LTZ and High Country trim levels, Chevrolet recently announced that for 2020, the engine option will also be available in the Silverado 1500 Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss and RST trims, and will be standard equipment in the Silverado 1500 Z71 4x4.

As if that wasn't enough, buried in a press release touting the features of the all-new 2020 SIlverado 1500 was the very big news that Chevy will be offering 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500s equipped with the big L87 V8 and even MORE horsepower and torque, announcing the development of a 6.2-Liter Performance Upgrade Package that boosts the already stratospheric horsepower numbers by 15 horsepower and nine foot-pounds of torque, to 435 hp/469 lb-ft.

According to the press release, the Performance Upgrade Package will consist of a high performance air intake and cat-back performance exhaust, adding horsepower through free breathing. By all appearances, the gains are identical to those achieved by the $1,645 cat-back exhaust system and the $625 cold-air intake sold through GM's Chevrolet Accessories Catalog for the 2019 Chevy Silverado.

@Grumpy Bear......that's your opinion, but I have had one of these and it makes a huge difference. Do you want to know how? Well, after racing my stepdads ecoboost, I gained a half a truck length, so you can take your ambient temperatures along with your stock air intake and grab a bowl of porridge and maybe you will be HappyBear!

Actually, it isn't an opinion any more than gravity is an opinion. It's physics.

Specifically, gas laws. 

God made those laws.

I remember back in the day I used to tell my wife that dual glass packs and an open air cleaner saved gas. It’s true it does. It takes a long tim. And you have to keep your foot out of it. Who does that? So just admit it. You want it for the noise. My wife started reading my hot rod magazines. And put me on allowance. That was 40 years ago. Funny thing though, she has the collector car now. I don’t anymore.

Well Scruffy, luckily we live in the 21st century. We now have microwaves so take your porridge, warm it up, sit down, and look up some information on all of these CAI. There is a lot of dyno sheets and data proving they do help and have benefits! 

 

You might find some useful info, and it might spark a light in you to mod your truck and enjoy it more!! Good day and have a great weekend!

Good points on here. I have a 16’ GMC denali ultimate with the 5.3. I bought my truck new with 2,000 miles on it. It had a weird idle within a week so I figured it was something I was doing wrong. Nope. Fast forward to 2021 and I have put pirelli all seasons tires on, RXP catch can with a clean side separator, factory cat back Borla exhaust. The 2 biggest gains in throttle response were the 1. Borla and immediate. 2. Catch can- no more rough idle but a lot of gunk to be cleaned out periodically. Intake stays clean for the most part. I did buy a ARaid air Filter and elbow and took it off and tossed it somewhere in the garage. The COI are ok at mid range and with premium gas and a tune. The GM is a decent setup and they do tune it as a part of the package. I’d say the COI and exhaust with a tune won’t hurt anything. These V8 do suck in a lot of air.

Just installed an S&B on my 20 Denali with a 6.2. Can definitely hear it. I like the sound. Filter is massive. Did it add any power? I don’t know. I was averaging 17mpg, we’ll see how I do now. Some parts of the install were a bit tedious. Putting the stock inlet tube into the bottom of the air box with the rubber gasket was a pain in the butt. Also, keeping the rubber grommets from falling out on the backside of the air box was a minor annoyance. But that was the worst of it. Otherwise everything went together pretty easily. If you’re on the fence on one of these, I’d say buy the S&B. At least it’s the most cost effective. No reason to spend more than the cost of the S&B IMHO.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
