it’s the 6.2 with lower compression and an iron block for longevity, they only increased the displacement to compensate for the power loss.

 

I’d rather have the l86 personally

it has more Mechanical Leverage, because the crank is stroked 3mm or so.. on a 6.6  vs the 6.2

 

i  just like the idea of buying a set of high flow heads , e85 sensor , 6.2 intake, cam and 6.2 TB, and a tune.  call it good enough for the 5.3

To the op, you have a great motor on your hands, why not make it a stroker? Cheaper and you'll make more power then a stock 6.2. 

The l86 was used in the camaro and corvette. i’m pretty sure if you’re goal is to build the motor, you’d be far better off with the l86.

This was my 14, 6.2, 6 speed, and a 3.42 rear end, it was a very quick truck, stayed in the happy torque range a lot better than the 2 8 speeds that I have/had so far.

 

Remember a Charger R/T trying to pass me at 60, beat him to 90 plus, then let him pass, because I was in a truck, and common sense kicked in?

You don't know what your talking about, stop spreading misinformation.

 

The LT8 is a stroked lt1/l86. They all share the same architecture. 

 

The main difference is the heads and pistons to accommodate a lower compression ratio to run balls out all the time on 87 octane (401/464). The internals are more durable, no afm hardware, cast block etc.

 

Like I said. Bump the compression up by swapping the heads/pistons, and run 93 octane. It's easily making 500 plus without a cam swap.

Same architecture and different heads and internals, so what’s going to be more mod friendly, a motor that’s been out since 2014 and likely had over a million produced, or a motor released in 2020 for only hd trucks.


i realize it’s not THAT much different, but it’s still different. L86’s are a dime a dozen at this point. And you want to proceed with an all new motor as a platform, a new motor which doesn’t make any more power stock, and is likely much heavier, just for like a 6% increase in discplacement?

 

new flash, bolt on vettes and camaro’s are making 500whp! You’re talking about swapping the heads and pistons rofl. If you’re going to swap the heads and pistons, why start with the 6.6L anyway? Just for the block? Surely it’d be cheaper for a 427 shortblock.

 

You don’t actually know what you’re talking about. Nobody casually swaps heads and pistons in LT motors. These aren’t LS motors. Maybe in 10 years the 6.6L will be the way to go, but it sure as hell isn’t now.

After having my 2019 LD (the old body same as 2018) 5.3 custom tuned on 93 and set up for flex fuel/E85, not sure I need a 6.2.  My tuner was daily driver conservative and still found about 20hp tuning on 93 over stock 87 octane, and gained another 24hp on E85.  So over my baseline, on E85 I'm up 44hp.  Feels every bit as quick as a 6.2 6 speed.  I'm going to have to get some test data LOL.

everything is easy to say, swap this do that, flash this.... once life gets in the way it turns into a mothball project POS from hell. just buy a new truck with the correct options your looking for  this time.

To You, For all out modification I would go with the 6.6 over a l86/lt1. Its direct injected, has better block cooling, and its more durable straight from the factory. Yes the difference in displacement is actually a lot, but perhaps to the untrained eye it seems like very little. And I could be wrong, but the 6.6 might actually use the same heads as the lt1/l86 (I cant remember), I believe they just changed the crank and connecting rods to make it a stroker. So for after market parts, basically anything that bolts up to the lt1/l86.

 

I'll break it down. on 87 octane with a low compression ratio the 6.6 makes 464 ftlbs of torque and thats detuned from the factory. can you get the picture now? Not only can you make a lot more power on just the motor by bumping the compression up. The internals can handle boost no problem out of the gate. And on top of that, being a stroker engine it will make substantially more torque.

 

I didnt realize we were talking about who can afford what. That is i mean we weren't until you decided in your post above that we were.

My only concern with the 427 is longevity. I hear the strokers don't last long due to the added stress on the rotating Assembly.

modding is all about 3 things

cost/reliability/performance.

 

at no point, with any horsepower goal or any budget goal, does the 6.6 swap make sense.

 

everybody has a budget, and if your budget is smaller, you’ll do better with the l86. If your budget is bigger, you’ll do better with a custom shortblock. At no point does it make sense to use a 6.6.

    • I’m definitely interested to hear the end result here. 
    • My 2025 Silverado 1500 had to receive a brand-new engine (long block) under warranty last month at only around 16,500 miles. Before the replacement, the truck repeatedly displayed "Engine Oil Level Low" warnings, even though the Oil Life Monitor still showed around 50% remaining after about 6,000 miles since my last oil change. After seeing the warning several times, I checked the dipstick with the engine cold, and the oil level was completely normal. The next day, the message escalated to "Add Engine Oil." At first, I assumed it was just a faulty oil level sensor, so I brought the truck to the dealership. After inspecting the engine, they found internal cylinder wall scoring and ultimately replaced the entire long block under warranty. Before this happened, I was planning to install a 4-inch lift and suspension upgrade on my truck. After needing a new engine at just 16,500 miles, I honestly don't see the point anymore. I also contacted GM to ask whether my vehicle qualified for a buyback, but I was informed that it does not at this time. Anyway, this experience has left me with serious concerns about the long-term reliability of this engine. I sincerely hope NHTSA expands the current investigation or recall to include 2025 model and performs a thorough inspection of affected vehicles. My biggest concern is that these engines may fail shortly after the powertrain warranty expires. If GM truly stands behind this engine, then at the very least, please consider extending the powertrain warranty to 10 years for affected owners. That would go a long way toward restoring customer confidence.
    • Without exception but then I'm the odd duck, right? I know what goes into that test, how it is calculated and thus how to beat it. But EPA values are often not beaten by the general public and the government has in past years adjusted the means and methods to come to those values to more closely approximate "Joe Average".    The only real trick to beating that EPA average is don't drive like "Joe Average".    It's the same method you used to profit from "Economic Migration" and in doing so beat the 'stats'. But you, like me, are not "Joe Average".     The thing you don't seem to grasp is this "Purchasing Power Index" isn't forward looking. It doesn't predict what it going to be but looks backward and states what it was. They are not telling us what the THINK, they are telling us what they MEASURED. Example:    Wife says "I'm going to lose 40 pounds by Christmas". May she does, maybe she doesn't but the doctors office who weighed her when she made that statement and again at Christmas only REPORTS what the RESULT was. You and I can banter about what was possible and what aunt Tilly did till the cows come home but the result is the result. Arguing otherwise is.....irrational. That's all I'm saying. This isn't about:      What you are calling a 'Statistic' is a RESULT not a CALCUATION and as a result the RULE. Like gravity as a rule, it can not be broken. 
    • Just wanted to say thank you for posting this. Years later, your thread is still helping Silverado owners.   I bought my 2025 Silverado 1500 in January 2025, and I've had what feels like the exact same rattle since day one. After reading your findings, I believe my truck has the same issue with the cable carrier contacting the rear sliding window. To be honest, I had pretty much given up on pursuing the issue. It wasn't until I recently drove another brand's pickup that I realized just how quiet their cabin was—and how noisy mine has been all along. On my truck, the rattle happens on almost any paved road, gets even worse on rougher pavement, and I can even hear it during braking and acceleration.   I actually referenced your thread when submitting my case to GM, hoping they'll recognize this as a recurring issue instead of treating it as an isolated incident. The reason I reached out to GM first is because my dealership told me they would need to keep the truck for at least two days just to diagnose the problem. I was concerned that even after two days, they still might not be able to identify the source of the rattle before giving the truck back to me. I had also asked a few dealerships about this issue during previous service visits, but none of them seemed to know what was causing it or had a solution. That's why I decided to contact GM directly first, hoping they might already have an official repair procedure or guidance for this issue.   I also hope GM eventually comes up with an official fix for this problem. I have a feeling there are many Silverado owners experiencing the same rattle, but most either choose to live with it or simply don't know what the cause is.   Really appreciate you taking the time to document your diagnosis. Your post is still making a difference years later.
