I think my Rancho needs help

Does this shock look like it’s “weeping” or leaking to y’all?

I’m crossing my fingers that it’s shot. The driver’s side shock isn’t wet or dirty at all. This would help explain how my rear end feels even looser than normal, which was already no bueno.

Hard to say if that is oil or it's just in a direct path of water/mud/dirt while you are driving. That shock is on the front half of the rear axle and the other side isn't.

I would clean it up super good and check back on it in 500 miles or something. If there is a film on the surface again, it's probably the oil seeping out.

It’s definitely oil of some kind. I felt it. And you can see the “Rancho” label is peeling off as well. Water wouldn’t do that.

I’m going to have my dealer look at it next time I’m in, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen. I think a few guys have said their Ranchos leaked after the first 10K miles.

Also, my truck hasn’t seen moisture on the road in over 6 weeks, probably. Been pretty dry here in ole Texas. So the shock being wet is clearly some oily liquid.

Wouldn’t surprise me. I didn’t have Ranchos but one of my OEM NHT shocks was leaking after less than 15k. Both went in the trash bin for 5100s, good riddance.

Yeah I really just need to finally bite it and put the 5100s back there. I was waiting for them to come out forever, like the rest of us. Then when they finally did, I figured they would just make my fronts feel even WORSE. So I assumed I would need to buy up for all 4, which would require a shop installing the fronts for me.

Then I got the itch for a performance exhaust and CAI and forgot about my shock woes.

I’m satisfied with the ride using the 5100s only in back. It did correct some of the tail happy behavior over broken roads that the 2019s are notorious for. Hasn’t completely eliminated it, but there was a noticeable difference over one stretch of road I drive every day.

I just bit the bullet and purchased 5100’s for the rears. I think my rear passenger side is leaking as well. How hard is install? Is it simply unbolt, replace? Or do I have to jack it up?

Unbolt and replace. No need to jack it up, you can compress the shocks by hand.

Leave the little straps on the new shocks while bolting them on...you won’t even need to compress them much by hand. Just takes small adjustments to line them up from there.
