@truckguy82 They would use the same R-134a - which is cheap and widely available. Forget I mentioned the other stuff; you're truck doesn't use it and they are not going to put it in.

If you don't have the tools to work on the HVAC, rather than learning and investing in the tools and knowledge, I would say it would be easier to take it to a dealer or a mechanic.

I have the tools etc which is why I bought 35 lbs years ago for personal use and for close friends. I also have the reclaimer machine. Anyway, as others mentioned, before you decide to do anything, you should measure what's coming out. "Cold" might be a relative term. The system should function at specific temperatures/have a specific reduction in temperature in the cabin given several variables.

You can call around to get prices. Sometimes what people do is have a mechanic suck out the old stuff. Then you can put the specific amount back in. Again, you'll have to consider what you want to invest - time to learn diagnosis (which obviously can repay you back over time), or money now and just have a mechanic do it for you.

I've noticed on my truck, that is usually set at 72ºF, it does not get cold during the day, but is comfortable during the evenings/nights.  I have to set it to 68ºF during the day, to cool off the cab.  My wife's MB is set for 72ºF and is FRIDGED!!!!  ?  Especially during the middle of the day, when it's been >100ºF.  We'll see what the service tech says after I take it in, in the next few weeks.

My 30 year old Chevy 20 year old Chevy 20 year old Acura and 10 year old Genesis worked as well as my recent new Toyota. That’s in Texas heat. I would advise using a professional to service it.

On a side note, I've noticed my 2018 (with the newer refrigerant) doesn't seem to cool nearly as fast as my R-134a vehicles....

Same here on my 2018... I took it in for service several weeks ago and the dealer said it was to specification.  The service rep agreed with me that it doesn't cool very effectively, but there's nothing they could do.

My 2018 gmc gets real cold and i am always hot. Sometimes i have to close the vent close to the drivers door because my hand gets cold.

I also haven't had any issues with the ability of my 2018 to keep the cab cool and my truck is all black inside and outside.  134a and 1234yf really don't operate at different pressures like R12 did, so there shouldn't be any real difference in cooling ability.  In fact, they are technically interchangeable since they use the same PAG oils.  Its technically illegal but there are already people who have swapped in 134a on 1234yf systems using adapters.  Mostly due to how cheap and easy to find 134a is.

So interesting update

now it seems my heat is not working well, well maybe.

So it’s 59 degrees out, truck is fully warmed up. Heat is set to auto and hi.
-fan is running at full tilt

-no air coming out of front/main vents

-very little air coming out of defrost

-a lot of air coming out of footwells

-I can switch it to the individual vents manually and they all work fine. The blend door is working.

-cabin filter is new and there is plenty of air flow

-When I had the heat set to 77 auto, and the truck was like halfway warm (certainly warm enough to pump out warm air), it was still cold inside the cabin, and almost nothing was coming out as if it thought the cabin was already 77.

so weird

when you guys have heat on auto does nothing come out of the main vents?
