3.0 duramax oil change

Recommended Posts

They created the new oil spec for a reason.

They only use it in this motor.

They don't call for it in the 6.6L big brother.  It uses the same spec as most semi truck-sized and large offroad diesels.

They don't call for it in the 2.8L little brother either. It calls for a third type of oil.

The emissions stuff on the 3.0L is combined in a way we have not seen before.

I haven't seen any document that says for sure, but it would seem likely that the additives in DexosD are different from the other oils so that are compatible with the unique emissions on the 3.0L.

Emissions stuff is stupid expensive to replace.

And there won't be any warranty if they determine the wrong oil spec was used.

Unfortunately one of the reasons I went back to gasoline when I purchased the Sierra. I traded in a colorado diesel, I loved the diesel but the 5w-30 dexos 2 oil was relatively expensive. I really wanted the 3.0 duramax but between several emissions related issues on my colorado (all covered) and knowing that the 3.0 was using yet a different and, for now, relatively pricier oil, I just couldn't justify all the added costs.

I know it's not necessarily what this post was about, but it's so unfortunate that the diesel emissions systems need to be so complicated, which does bring us back to the dexosD oil!

I did use the oil kit from Amazon and everything went fine.   I will say they designed the crossbars and parts underneath to make the oilchange very simple and clean.  No dripping onto your frame or anything.

I save enough in fuel expenses vs. either v8 to pay a little extra for oil changes and still come out ahead.

Don't forget it holds less oil than the V8's....

FYI

In the newest AMSOIL magazine is a 0W20 Diesel oil for Dexos D applications.

Also a 5W30 for Dexos D.

Every time an OEM designs a new motor someone starts the oil FUD routine.

:shakehead:

GM does not have a 3.0 only/specific exhaust catalyst.

:wtf:

PF66 (GM #55495105) Oil Filter Shortage and Replacement Parts Effective 8/20/2021

Due to increase in demand in the past 6 months, the PF66 oil filter (GM# 55495105) is currently backordered.

In the immediate interim, GM Engineering has recommended the ACDelco UPF66R as the preferred approved filter.

While not equivalent with the OE filter, considering the potential impact on GM vehicle owner satisfaction, we are allowing the usage of the following aftermarket filters for a limited time until a solution is identified. Additional bulletins will be distributed advising of sufficient PF66 availability and ending the competitive aftermarket filter warranty. We will also continue to warranty the engines (subject to remaining warranty) that receive one of the following aftermarket filters:

  • Mighty – M9510
  • Valvoline – VO202
  • Parts Master – WL610351
  • Luber-finer – PH10066
  • Champ – PH10066
  • Wix – WL10351
  • NapaGold – 100351
  • PurolatorTech – TL11241
  • Purolator – L11424
