I was reading through the brochure for the 2021 Silverado 1500 and saw that there are only a couple of models where you still get low-range four wheel drive. I've owned a number of different trucks over the years, and although it was used very infrequently, I used 4L on every single one of them for something... Am I going to miss it?

For me, 4L was useful in my smaller trucks when I was driving off-road on "trails in the making". In the full-sized trucks, I've used it to get myself unstuck in very deep snow (sometimes, I have little choice but to drive INTO my driveway before I can clear when we get a lot of snow), moving the equipment trailer when it's heavily loaded (on the lawn), and sometimes for when I am doing something like putting tension on a tree / limb to either ensure it falls where I want or just to get it to break.

I have zero interest in something like a Trail Boss model simply to get 4L.

Does anyone have any real-world info on how their replacement 'technology' works compared a low-range transfer case?

No need to get the Trail Boss to get 4lo.   Any Silverado/Sierra with the Z71/X31 will get 4lo.

2 speed is standard on all 6.2s as well. Between that and the Z71 trucks, I would bet at least half of the 4x4s on the lots still have 4L.

Is the 2 speed still standard on a max tow package if you get the 6.2?
I thought I had read the 2 speed wasn't available on the max tow package at all, but they didn't say anything about engine options making a difference?
Just wondering if it makes a difference which engine with that package?
I haven't traded my 2017 yet partially because of this.
I currently run the 6.2 with the max tow, And while I don't use 4 low very often, there are a few times that I have wanted it for the heavy load on soft grounds. I don't even know why they would take the two speed away from the max tow package even in the smaller engines, makes no sense to me.
If anything you would think you take 4 low away from the street versions trucks, that never pull anything or go off-road

hold out for the low range... it is indispensable.. for backing up to a trailer or any number of crawling or pulling activities... i have a grand cherokee with no high range... its ok.. but a lot of capability and low speed control is lost...

Yeah, I have max tow and the two speed. The only way to get that combo is with the 6.2, the 5.3 max tow stupidly comes with a single speed transfer case.

They don’t really advertise it as such, but the two speed transfer case is tied to the 6.2 automatically no matter what suspension package.

Thanks!
Great news with that information!

I bought a X31 for this very reason alone, some things are easy to replace (rancho shocks) and some things are near impossible or crazy expensive to add after the fact...

since the general public has swithced to truck market from SUVs and mini vans seems they are catering more and more to that segment with more of an an AWD vehicle vs a 4WD specific one.....

Having low range was a deal breaker for me too, I have not had a yet yet that did not have it.  My LTZ with the 6.2L does have it.  My question to GM is why would they make two different transfer cases, probably cost savings.

Not sure if you're all commenting in regards to the 2021 model year or not, but the brochure definitely makes this difficult to follow.

The way the brochure is written, it seems to say (when you first read it) that the two TB trims and the HC trim don't include the two speed transfer case, but that's because it's baked into the base trim. Really stupid way of writing up the various features for the packages and trims.

It -appears- that the Max Tow package has no relationship to the availability of getting 4L.

Depends. Ordering max tow excludes you from getting the Z71/X31 off road package. So on 5.3 trucks it is completely impossible to get max tow with the two speed because it would only come via the Z71/X31 package.

While the two speed is also standard on factory lifted trucks, Denali, and 5.3 High Country, those trucks cannot get the max trailering package. The 6.2 High Country oddly enough can, but that’s another story...

I'm glad my RST Z71 has 2-speed, it got me out of an extremely tricky situation once where my front bumper was an inch from a brick wall, the back bumper was about a foot away from the bumper of a car parked close to the back of my truck, and my front tires were against a curb. So glad I had it and would never order one without 4LO but the computer version supposedly does a good job.. all of my 4x4's had 4Lo, I love it.

    • Just did an injector/HPFP replacement on Pepper at 192,400 miles; close enough to 200K, RIGHT? (If 200K is considered life end and to me it isn't). But hey, to each his own.    Have never run a catch can on this vehicle. Back side of every valve looked like a new valve spray painted semigloss black. Port walls looked 'neat' (all a normal result of passive EGR via VVT) Zero build up even in AFM cylinders. Just color. It uses no measurable oil and never has.    At 155,000 I put her on E-85 and a borescope of the cylinders at plug change showed very clean pistons and valve faces. The replaced injector tips looked new. (It was the pump piston seal that was leaking). Oh well, have six good backups.    Still gets 28 mpg on gas (highway average) and over 20 (highway) on alky. UOA's look good and runs as good now as it did when I bought it. Better in fact.    What improvement would a Catch Can provide this motor?     And given all this I expect that IF I installed one I'd see some water/gas/oil vapor accumulation. Byproducts of normal combustion.   Having said that, IF my motor used an appreciable amount of oil I'd consider it a useful 'crutch' until I had the situation corrected OR if bore polished, until I junked it or rebuilt it to stave off repeated plug fouling.    I'm not telling you what I THINK. But what its DONE.
    • Love the look. I'm a SCSB lover myself.    Two items. 1.) A spacer changes scrub radius but this also changes when we use wheels of different offsets. A little isn't a big deal. 2.) Steel wheels, alloy wheels all have different thickness. Same effect on the stud and lug nut as a spacer. When hub centric the wheel isn't supported by the stud. It's supported by the hub. The stud just keeps it all together.
    • I had a evap sol go bad a couple weeks ago. . I replaced it.  While watching live data at the time I saw I had some cylinder 1 misfires. No MIL but on live data I could see ~50 at startup and about 70 more after an hour a drive all on cyl 1.  I also noticed that the LTFT were -5% to -15% always.  And that bank 2 is always -3% richer than bank 1. Even across all driving modes, city, highway, etc it’s always 3% richer than bank 1. So I start with the misfire. Swapped coil, plug, and plug wires from 1 to 3. No follow. I got an Injector reseal kit, pulled the D/s injector rail, swapped #1 and #3 injectors, resealed them, reinstalled and retested.  The misfire followed to 3. So I ordered and replaced all 8 injectors, spark plugs, and plug wires. Also replaced the 1 time use fuel pipes under the intake manifold.  Injectors that were in the truck since new were  Part # 12668390.  I replaced them with # 12742701 Got from RockAuto. Pretty certain they’re genuine and the correct ones. I called a friend at a parts store who told me “the 12742701 were the correct superseded part # for the originals I was replacing”. So started truck after replacing all that and it’s running -15 - -30 LTFTs. I reset the fuel trims with GDS2 and drove it for a 60 miles trip each way. There have been no changes in the LTFTs.  I checked if the HPFP was leaking into the crankcase. I removed the pvc and watched the trims. No difference.  I checked the alcohol content and it was at 10%  I’m out of ideas here. Truck seems to run great. Just always rich on the fuel trims.  Anyone with any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I ran an injector balance test just for the heck of it and it came back this. I’m confused.  I have gds2 and some other diag tools if anyone knows of anything I should test next.
