Recently registered so I could say thanks to the contributors on this thread. My 2017 Sierra started having this issue around 50-55K miles.  I'm at 70K now and it continually got worse to the point where it was happening every second or so.  I performed the fix described in this thread (and the referenced YouTube video) and installed the screen also referenced in this thread (using the part # and eBay link).  Easy fix. It's been working great for 2 months.  ver a couple days, the radio jumped to the screen for setting the clock and I thought "here we go again", but after cleaning the screen, it's been fine. Hoping it was oil/grease from my fingers, etc.

Total cost: $36. So thanks!

You just need the digitizer. I just replaced mine today and it works fine.

I does take a little effort but isn’t that hard if you aren’t ham handed and have a small degree of patience. The most time consuming thing for me was removing the old adhesive from the metal frame. While I had 2-sided mounting tape in both 2 and 3 mm size, the digitizer screen came with the mounting tape already applied to the screen.

A couple of years ago, both the digitizer and digitizer/screen combo were quite expensive. Much cheaper these days. Hopefully the quality didn’t follow the cost. The combo you linked to is the easiest route. Remove and replace. That convenience does however come with a cost about 5x compared to just the digitizer itself. Whatever route you choose, it beats hell out of a dealer fix that at one time was a grand. Who knows what that fix cost today.

Good luck.

Just did the digitizer replacement today and can also vouch that it's pretty easy and the most time consuming part was cutting the glue and getting the old screen off the metal frame, but having a heat gun helped tremendously, just go one side at a time and use a new blade.  I tried to avoid damaging the old digitizer but that was inevitable when I got to the side with the ribbon.

As a separate note, the first time I plugged it in and started it up, the display had purple blotches and lines.  Figuring that this wasn't due to the new digitizer unless the glass was somehow deformed, I went back and reseated all the ribbon cables I had disconnected and blew on them to clean the connections.  That fixed the issue in case other experience the same issue.

Have yet to drive it around and really confirmed it fixed the "ghost touch" issue, but have high confidence.  Used this part on Amazon, currently on sale for $28.

Edit:  I also found this video helpful, even though its from a Yukon/Tahoe, at 18:05 it shows how to remove the old digitizer:

7" screen available for mailing cost only.

I didn't do my research thoroughly enough before ordering the wrong size touch screen from Hong Kong - I got the 7" instead of the 8" my 2018 GMC Sierra 3500 HD needed. It's a $28 part that cost me $45 to ship from China.  Oh well. I bought a used radio assembly from a u-pull-it yard, which still has a dead zone on the right side, but at least has quit the ghost-touch problem for now. I expect it will resurface. Thanks to the folks who posted the part number for the screen alone. I know I'm going to need it pretty soon.

In the meantime, my education can pay you dividends. I don't want to toss this perfectly good screen if someone can use it. I'm in Portland, OR and would be willing to ship it to you if you pay the postage. I think USPS can get it to you via Priority Mail for about $5. Message me here and we'll work out the details. No money up front - you get the part, then Venmo me the mail cost.

Bill Hudson,  what was the outcome with your touch screen?   Was the dealer able to resolve your issue?

My 2016 is acting very similar

thanks

I've got a 2015 Sierra with same problems. Flipping channels, jumping icons, putting calls on mute or hold.  Mentioned it to my dealer who said, "Gee I've never heard of this."  Immediately realized I was on my own, LOL.

Tried everything. Disconnecting battery, pulling fuses, nothing seemed to work. I ordered a new touch screen and digitizer from Amazon.  Very easy to install. Takes about 20 minutes.  Drove the truck for 30 minutes following and all seemed well.  Next time I drove it, the same problems returned. Coulda put my fist through the screen!

Couple days later after regaining my composure, I removed the screen and digitizer. I took WD-40 Contact Cleaner and sprayed the heck out of everything even spraying it into the CD player.

Two weeks later and so far, so good.  Crazy to me how there doesn't seem to be just one fix for this problem. I fully expect a class action lawsuit.

I was having the same issue with my display changing on its own on occasion. It ended up being the fob for door locks and remote start. Have had no issues since getting a nee fob it's been 2 weeks now.

I have a 2020 suburban with the same problem with radio. Anyone else with a suburban? The dealership hasn’t been helpful.

I gave mine a really good cleaning, getting rid of all the fingerprints, and any dust I could see. Has been working great again for almost 3 months. Have been using the hard keys and my Chevy app to control everything, just to keep the dirt on the screen down.

thank you to all who contributed in this thread (and other similar ones). the display in my new-to-me 2017 LTZ started going crazy last week. flipping through screens and behaving erratically. i was pretty bummed thinking it would cost hundreds to fix. luckily, a simple Google search led me here. i picked up a digitizer screen from Amazon which arrived the next day. the unit was easy to get out of the truck but the actual digitizer was stubborn about coming off the LCD unit. a heat gun, some persuasion and a little bit of patience got it off. for the record, it did not come off cleanly. the digitizer did crack and break. i carefully cleaned it up and installed the new digitizer. it came with the tape pre-installed. got it all back together and so far, it's been solid. no issues yet. i also bought a complete unit (LCD & Digitizer) as a backup, just in case. Digitizer was $27ish and the full unit was about $135 (?). now if it happens again, i'll swap the complete unit out and repair the one in there now with a new digitizer. you can get the unit out in about 10 minutes being careful. so, i'll drop another $27 for another digitizer and have a spare. i hope it's not needed but i'll have a backup plan that i can implement in about 15 minutes. otherwise, the truck is great. love the look and the way it drives. plan on keeping it for a while, so figuring out ways to avoid the dealership is key to saving money in the long run.

I have 2018 GMC SLT 96,000 miles

And my screen is all over the place and I can hear the noise as if I’m changing the station

it goes from screen to screen by itself 🤷🏼‍♀️

So what could be the problem?
