Hey Guys,

Does anyone know assembly rationale for 1500 Silverado (2023) in Roanoke, IN vs Silao, MX vs Oshawa, Canada?  From the research I've done it looks like if you order a 5.3, the engine is made in Silao, Mexico but the Truck assembly is in the newly revised plant in Oshawa, Canada.  On the other hand, the 6.2 is made in the US and the final truck assembly is either Silao, Mexico or Roanoke Indiana if you get the 6.2.  I don't know what dictates the final truck assembly choice of Silao Mexico vs Roanoke Indiana, but there may be certain options that drive that...

It appears on the surface that ordering to delivery is quicker if assembly is not at Oshawa Canada.  They've added a third shift there but the real issue is the trucks already built sitting on their lot waiting for chip related fixes and working through shipping logistic problems.

If you are trying to control what plant it comes from I doubt it can be done. It's luck of the draw. The crew cab is the most in demand truck. I mean when they 1st started production of these in 19 most all crews came from Mexico. That has changed now though.

Does it really make a difference?

No.

Where is gets built is likely dependent on some computer algorithm that takes in a similitude of data, most of which we could not even hazard a guess at.  GM has 1,000's of suppliers that operate on "just in Time" delivery so all that has to be weighed when the plant assignment is made,  not likely a human decision.   I seen video of the "Just in Time" strategy that 100's of truck delivery parts to the plants  within 4 hrs of the vehicle coming down the assembly line.  Contrary to what many may think, parts are not stock piled at the plant. Almost every major component coming is dedicated to a specific build.

Here is a old video on "Just in Time".

That was my point, if the build location is that important in your buying decision, probably should look at another brand of truck.

In my original post, I stated that the Canada plant has opened a 3rd shift while the real issue is the tons of trucks already built waiting on shipping, not the immediate need for more manufacturing.  I don't know for sure, but the "order to delivery" lead time may be greater if assembled in Canada.  Therefore, if a 6.2 is ordered, it would likely be assembled in Mexico or US and have a quicker delivery time????

I've had several GM trucks built in recent years in Mexico and have had no issues.  My preference for build location would be for quicker turnaround only and not any other reason.  All locations may have the same delivery lead time but it was just a question as I'm not sure.

If you have a dealership you trust, check in with the fleet manager who orders the vehicles for the lot. They should be able to give you a "rough" idea on how long the wait has been on trucks.

Canada has been doing HD only that I know of.  They might be getting some 1/2 ton as well?

Otherwise 1/2 ton crews are Silao, Mexico or Ft.Wayne Indiana.  Flint is all HD.

Yes looks like they may have started the 1/2 ton as well in Canada...

GM Adds Third Chevy Silverado Production Shift At Oshawa (gmauthority.com)

Excerpt from the article:

"The Oshawa Assembly plant in Canada is GM’s only truck plant capable of producing the heavy-duty Silverado HD and light-duty Silverado 1500 on the same production line. The automaker also produces the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 at its Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana and Silao Assembly plant in Mexico, while production of the Silverado HD and Sierra HD takes place at the Flint Assembly in Michigan. Oshawa does not produce the GMC Sierra nameplate at this time."

I know this off topic but man i wish our manufacturing would come back home.  I'm aware of the labor rates etc but sucks so much American stuff is not in the states.  I know everyone does this.

I read a article some time ago that intimated the Canadian built 1500's were mostly destined for Canadian distribution.  I checked inventory at 3 dealers in this area and not one Silverado or Sierra on their lots are from Canada.  About 100 trucks.....

Ya I believe they're coming to the US as well.  I've looked at many window stickers over the last week for local dealers and they are listed as final assy in Canada (engine elsewhere).

My 6.2 Trail Boss crew cab that was made near the end of March 22 was made in Mexico.

I'm in the South East and nearly everything I see is made in Mexico.

Here's a data point: I got tired of waiting on a 2500 order to be picked up so I built a 1500 RST crewcab 5.3 on the Chevy website.  Found one with all my desired options on the inventory menu "in-transit" to Akron OH (the only one like it within 2,000 miles, only 110 miles from home). It was built in Oshowa, mid-June, and I picked it up 1 Oct 22 when it arrived in Akron. It is a 2022.5 refreshed model. Three and a half months from production to delivery.
