New guy here... never ordered before, never even bought 'new' before.  Strange times.

Trying to make heads or tails of the whole process.  Reached out to the local dealer - small-town family-owned place - and initial impression is that *if* they can get an allocation, it'd be 6-8 months out from then.

The order/build times here sound a little more encouraging - although the whole shipping thing sounds frustrating.

Do I need to skip the local dealer and find some place that does more volume so that I can actually get a truck before say, next year's camping season?  Do dealers generally let you know that ordering a certain config is going to be more delayed than others, or do they just let you put the order in and wait to see?

Seems weird to commit to purchasing a vehicle that I've never even sat in, much less driven.  Not that there are many on local lots *to* test drive.  Much less one like what I'm actually looking for (3500HD, dually, gas)

Well you picked a perfect time to but a new truck...lol

But really I think a higher volume dealer can get it a little sooner and may shave a few months.

I think GM is dropping the ball on this, on purpose or not I don't know which.

They are not communicating anything to either their dealers or the customer and that what really sucks.

The allocation system is stupid. Big dealers get bigger, small dealers stay small. My local dealership has great service but just can't pull in vehicles to meet demand, hence me always buying elsewhere. I would love for dealerships to just go away, or at the very least change the entire process wherein folks order directly from GM with their choice of delivery location.

Well, I thought I dodged the bullet when I got the current truck in 2021!

TBH, it's pretty much exactly the truck we want - has everything we want, nothing that we don't... but didn't realize a) how much the camper manufacturers lie about their weights and b) how quickly the weight balloons even further when you actually use the dang thing.  Made the mistake of weighing it 'wet'... started shopping for a dually the next day 😉

Initially started looking at the new 7.3L gasser, but reports of how far behind Ford is on production got me looking at the Chevy 6.6L / Allison 10 spd combo.  I'm liking what I see/hear about that setup, but trying to find something available with that combo + the camper package is proving elusive.

According to dealer mine has been accepted. But according to the chat box on gmc website my order has been place but not accepted. So which one to believe.

When did the dealer tell you yours was accepted? I think there is a lag between the chat and what the dealer can see. My dealer told me my order was accepted on a Thursday, but the chat didn't update to reflect that until the following Tuesday (5 days later). It seemed to be similar throughout the process as far as when it was being built and when it was shipped.

So to that point, I think(key word think) that some dealers can not send(place) an order with GM until GM gives them the go ahead, so when your dealer is saying accepted they mean they were allowed to place an order by GM not necessarily that the order has been accepted to run in production.

It took like 6 weeks or something for mine to be accepted by GM.

Hmm, yeah, it could be the terminology the dealer is using isn't matching up with what's actually happening. Getting an allocation and submitting the order is different than it being "accepted" by GM. Might be worth asking your dealer to clarify what status it is in since it's been almost a couple weeks since the 7th.

Notified today that mine is built and pending shipment. Order was accepted on June 1st. Now the real wait begins. Hopefully only a few more weeks.

Well, ping pong ball to tennis ball sized hail in the Flint area today. All I could think about was all those lots of HDs awaiting shipment. 😬 Haven’t heard if any hit near the assembly but my first thought to seeing the weather was that I guess I’m glad mine isn’t built yet. Hopefully those lots didn’t get hit.

We checked with some of the local dealerships, and called a few others - even one supposedly ranked as the 'top GM dealership in Washington state' - and got told across the board, 10-14 months out, *after* they got an allocation - *if* they could get one.  One salesman did quietly suggest finding some place that did higher volume and things might go faster.

So back to looking for used.  Started looking at F350 PSD again.  Found a promising one, not too far away. Called them, and in the course of the conversation, they said they'd been getting orders in 10-14 *weeks*, not months and had no problem getting allocations.  Sent them a build sheet, waiting on a price.  Might be getting one after all...

We got hard rain about 12 miles South of there but no hail. I have heard reports of hail damage North of Saginaw though. I am sure if theres some damage we will hear about it and the local painless dent guys will be hopping.

Mine was delivered in 3 months and part of that was waiting 2 weeks for my dealer to get an allocation.
I realize youre a long way from Flint but they are building over 1000 trucks per day across 3 shifts and have been since March. There are dealers around here with 24's on the lots. You might try a dealer in another state and do a fly and drive to pick one up. Although demand has been high and there are a number of constraints they arent quite as rare as your being told. The fact that your dealer doesnt have allocation and doesnt know if or when they will get any might say something about them.

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
