Hi folks, new 2023 sierra 1500 owner here, and my first GMC. Question about the parking brake. The times at which it engages automatically when I shift into park versus not, and disengaging automatically when I shift a reverse or drive, seem to be somewhat random. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t, and I have to manually do it. Are there any tricks here or something I’m not noticing or a setting somewhere? Thanks for your help.

mine works the same way, i have a steep driveway and sometimes i pull in i let it creep to a stop to see if it will roll backwards, most of the time the brake will come on and other times it does not and the truck will roll

Taking foot off the brake or just a slight touch of the gas pedal should release it if shifting doesn't.

I think GM is trying to keep owners from using the "parking pawl" in the transmission to hold the vehicle in place on anything other then flat ground. I have noticed the same thing.  If the ground if flat it won't engage, park on a hill and it will.  Also, I noticed if you're stopped at a light you can press the park button and then you can take your foot off the brake. The truck will stay in place and all you need to do is touch the go pedal and it will turn off the parking brake and you're off.

If you park on flat ground without applying the parking brake then get out and rock the vehicle back and forth the e-brake will auto apply. Happened to me several times.

interesting, i was hooking up to my boat and put the parking brake on and put it in park. hooked the boat up and when i put the truck in drive i got a warning about the brake being on and had to release it manually

No need to manually release the parking brake. Just bump the throttle once and it'll release.

I haven't completely paid attention but I believe if it auto-sets (due to an incline), it will auto-disengage when you put it in gear.  If you set it manually, it will disengage when you touch the gas, if you don't manually disable it.

I believe it senses went trailer is hooked up and will make you manually release the brake. This is how mine is. When I have nothing hooked up the parking brake will set and if I need to release it I put it in drive or reverse it releases, but when I’ve got my trailer hooked up I always have to manually release it. When I have the trailer hooked up it will set the parking brake no matter if I’m on flat ground or incline/decline but I have to manually release it.

I was confused about all this when I first got my 2022.  I went back and reread the Owner's Manual section about the parking brake and they describe all the ways it gets automatically set and released.

 

I don't really like it.  I have had situations where the truck sets the parking brake itself and then out of habit, I pressed the Park button (intending to set it) and unintentionally released it.

 

Part of the problem is having the same press-in button being used to set AND release the Parking brake. That's a very bad design. There should be a switch or lever that has an ON and an OFF direction that is not the same.  So if the truck turns it ON and I press the switch in the ON direction again, it stays ON (instead of releasing).

 

I doubt any GM design engineers read all this stuff here, but they should change it.  I predict they change it AFTER they lose a big lawsuit where the victim proves their faulty design caused a serious accident.

The whole refresh is a bad design in my opinion.  Wish I would have stuck with my 2020.

Piano black=sucks
Shifter is unintuitive (full forward should be PARK, not reverse)

This G damned parking brake automatically turning on.  Save a parking pawl, ride an e-brake?
Loss of space due to floor shifter
Front end's Chevy logo is up too high
Front end missing the turn signal lamps, independent of the DRLs isn't as nice looking

 

But hey.... we have a pretty screen

Adding insult to injury when the 'refresh' HD's finally arrived ( 2024 model ) the owners rant; being subjected to the stupid console shifter.

Has anyone had the parking brake disengage by itself as you are walking away from the truck? This has happened many times and it doesn't matter if the truck is on flat ground or on an incline.  I usually get about 50 feet away and I can hear it disengage and then see the truck roll up against the parking pin which eventually stops it.

Any help or ideas would be great. I've taken my truck to the dealer for this at least 10 times in 18 months for this and they can't find it or duplicate it since it doesn't happen all the time.

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions? 
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!  
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
