Just happened to us. 14xxx kms, just past the one year mark. Want to try to sell us on the rebuild. No thanks. But waiting for another 6.2 may take six months or more. Our 2012 with a 5.3 was at 359000 km when we sold it, nothing but a little oil consumption in 12 years. Sold it because I was worried about reliability. Ordered a 2022 Yukon Xl, waited almost a year to end up in a 2023 that they couldn't honor the price or financing. Everything about this has been a run around and now I don't even have it. Buyback isn't an option because now that truck is $20k more. I have been brand loyal most of my life, but this may change that.

I work at a GMC Buick dealer and we are seeing these failures alot.All spun bearings on the 6.2 engines and no parts or engines available. Just had a 23 yukon towed in yesterday with 9300 miles on it. Locked up solid. Absolute nightmare,We are replacing another 6.2 that was ordered 8/22/23 and it just showed up tuesday! The lift next to that one is tied up with yet another collapsed lifter job.GM better get there ****** together soon.

I've been in the market for a new 1/2 ton, and the Silverado LT Trail boss was my top pick with the 6.2L.

 

After reading the horrors throughout Facebook and on here, no way in hell I'm buying one.  I've seen one person post they made it past 100k without lifter failures.  

 

I work in the auto industry and every GM dealer I talk to is making a killing on these trucks in the service lane from the warranty work paid for by GM.  

 

I wish they got their ****** together because now it looks like I'll be buying the Ram 5.7 before its gone, definitely don't want the Ford 5.0 because its the most boring vehicle on the road and the Tundra looks like its made out of legos with how much plastic is on it.

I recommend you go over to the ram forums and read up on the 5.7 as they are having their fair share of engine issues from lifters to cams, manifolds etc. It's not just GM.

Have a 2021 Chevy TB with a 6.2. 

 

First engine failed at 22k in the shop for two months, Approx: 1 month to approve motor swap, 1 month to replace the motor. 

 

Second motor failed at 23k, took them one month to replace the motor.

 

Both failures occurred at cruising speed on the freeway towing a lighter boat.  Both bottom end failures.

 

I think GM needs to step up and do something about this, I talked with GM and they refused a buyback and/or full replacement.

I know a few guys with the previous gen trucks and a few of them have made it to 200k without a bad AFM lifter. Not sure what they're doing different to not have a problem. Maybe it's because they change their oil every 3 or 4,000 miles lol. 

 

All manufacturers are having issues. The new Tundra is having as many engine failures as the current 6.2 is it would seem. Lots of Tundras with destroyed main bearings at 20-30k miles. Toyota even has issues with the 3.5L they've been making in various revisions for the last decade. There's a big list of 2016+ Tacomas with 3.5L engine failures despite being well-maintained.

 

Ford is using junk rubber belts to spin the oil pump on the 2.7 and 5.0 these days and you have to pull everything including the timing chains off to change it. If you don't change it often enough, your engine will die. The youtube channel "I Do Cars" has torn down a few Ford engines with the belt and they all looked bad for the mileage and for how long Ford insists the belt is good for. Plenty of other issues that their engines have had lately... still can't figure out how to make dohc engines that don't have cam phaser rattle. 

 

Ram has always had issues with the 5.7 eating cams and lifters too but from what some people insist, the best way to limit your chances of that happening is to not let the 5.7 idle too long. I know a few guys with the current gen Ram that have been happy with them otherwise. 

 

Not deflecting from the issues with the 6.2. GM has obvious issues in their house when it comes to those engines. I have a co-worker that was telling me the other day that their relative bought a new 2023 with the 6.2 and it failed on the 2 hour drive home. Seems strange that so many manufacturers are having bearing failures like this.

I assume it's way too early to know whether they've fixed this for the 2024 models? I've heard it relates to some parts from Mexico during COVID so I'm wondering if it's been fixed by sourcing parts from elsewhere.

Still doing it.  Sure, its not every single 6.2 but its still happening.  Most of them are low mileage though, under 10k miles.  

 

It affected the 14-20 6.2s (L86) as well but not as prevalent/with more miles on them.  We have one we are waiting on an engine for that failed at ~80k miles.  We don't know when we will see an engine either due to the core shortage on L86s.

I’m not going past 2006 for a used GM. My 2014 was the best for ride, wind noise and performance. Especially with the E-85 option. I would love to buy a newer used GM. It’s just not going to happen. I don’t drive a truck enough for a new one. Talk about a crap shoot.

Was on my way home from hunting, coasting down from 75mph(spd limit) to 55 to go through a small speed trap town.  Heard some abnormal noises under the hood, was checking gauges/lights when the truck just died and shifted itself into neutral.  Luckily I was able to coast it into a feed store parking lot without getting ran over.  Dealer says its not in the valvetrain, something on the bottom end.  There's 4 other 6.2's in front of mine that they are tearing into the bottom end.  All have the same symptoms.  

 

Popular reading online is blaming the rod bearings on 22+ 6.2 vehicles, not isolated to Silverado/Sierra.  Hopefully GM is has already changed suppliers but who knows.  No timeline but its looking like I'll be driving the 2wd loaner for a while.

We bought our 2023 Cadillac Escalade in August 2022.  On April 13, 2024 we were driving on an Interstate at about 70 mph when the engine quit and shifted itself into neutral.  Luckily we were able to coast to the right shoulder and sat there for 4 hours until a tow truck arrived.  Diagnosis: Engine was blown with metal fragments in the oil pan.  It only had about 10,240 miles.   The engine was a 6.2L V8

I have a 2024 1500 RST 6.2L that the motor let go at 2500 miles… The dealership only said metal in the oil pan and they contacted GM and they authorized a brand new engine replacement. I do not want the same issues with the replacement engine that I had with mine… I asked how long and they told me a nationwide backorder for the 6.2L and NO ETA on a replacement engine. I heard there is a main journal machining tolerance issue on the Sialo Mexico built motors and GM is moving the machining back to US…any truth to this?

I have not heard this. You are the first one I have heard this from.

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions? 
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!  
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
