After years of debate I think I might be about to take the jump out of my 2016 to a new 2024 T1.  I would be going from SLT to SLT.

If you came out of a K2 into a T1, what were your thoughts on the change?

There are things that I like better about my current truck, but it is getting older (113k miles on the odometer).

Of course I imagine there would be things I would like better about the T1 but having never lived with one I’m not sure?

Thanks!

My retirement truck was a K2. I like GM improvements so much I now drive a 02 Avalanche. 😆

i went from a 2014 to a 2020, as much as i liked my 2014 with all the mods i did, i do love the 2020. i sold my 2014 to my son at 175k miles and it is about to hit 200k with everything still original, but i would never go back the 2020 is just a better truck

Yes, 2019 LD double cab which was the old body 2019 K2 to a 2022.5 T1 LT crew cab.

I love the look and layout of the new dash they put in the T1s, its very older GM truck in its look (GMT-800 and GMT-900).  The updated dashes are miles ahead of the early T1s in their design.

The ride is better as is the handling when pushed in the twisties.

The size increase is noticeable when you go back and drive a K2.  The K2 was like driving a GMT-900 with a raised hood line, the T1s are almost GMT-900 HD feel.  The weight loss too is felt as all the engines are quicker at what they do.  About 200-400lbs depending on cab configuration and engine.  A crew 4x4 5.3 LT for example weighs a hair under a K2 5.3 double cab.  The 2.7s crew 4x4 are even less than that often in the 4950-5100lbs range.

Crew cab rear is very roomy, more roomy than the K2 crew cab.

Powertrain wise, my K2 was a 5.3 6 speed, my T1 is a 2.7 Turbo HO (now called Turbomax) with the 8 speed.  I absolutely love the HO/Turbomax.  Lots of low end (very diesel like just with a higher rev range), and with the weight loss over the same truck with a 5.3 they are as quick as that 5.3 equipped truck.  GM's internal testing 0-60 they were identical times.  My 8 speed has been good (8L90) but there's been some bugs, however it was replaced with a gen 2 8 speed, the 8L80 and seems to have fixed all the flaws so far.

Turbomax and the 3.0 diesel are the only 2 engines that get the 5yr/100k mile powertrain warranty.  Turbomax started in 2024, prior it was 5yr/60k mi.

V8 and 10 speeds?  Big difference over the 6 speeds in the K2s and better than the 8 speeds in early T1 and K2.  The 5.3 10 speed combo is, to me, the goldilocks of the 2 V8s as it makes it feel like the best 5.3 in years.  Obviously the 6.2 is the 6.2 there's some hesitation on those from the engines locking up on 2022 and 2023 trucks/SUVs.

Drawbacks?

The refreshes seem to have a good amount of radio software glitches.  GM seems to be releasing updates once a month or every other month on the IOK radio (the big screen new dashes).

The Silverados LT-High Country and Sierra SLE, SLT and Elevation, there's a trim piece under the screen with the wood look laminate.  Likes to make noise.  I had mine replaced, now the second one started to do it again.  I think its the way its assembled, plastic on plastic on plastic with no sort of thin flocking tape between the layers to quiet it down when it starts to get some "play" in each segment.

Brakes.  T1s love to kill brakes.  The "duralife" FNC coated rotors were pretty good on K2, but they messed something up on T1.  They get rust on them rather quick in the rotor surface, especially if it isn't driven much.  Then it will eat the pad monitor sensor and that will kick on with good pad life left but the sensor is wore through from either debris or the rotor eating it.  Rear brakes it happens the most.  Otherwise I love the brake feel on them with the 4 piston fixed fronts.  Good stopping power.

Google.  If you want to use anything Google, like the built in Google maps navigation, you need the connected services from Onstar.  I think $15/mo?  If you wait for a 2025, you get 8 years included in the truck, no subscription payment.

Early T1s had a lot of wire chaffing issues in the harnesses under the hood.  Seems to have improved.

Ground straps.  So far again, early T1 2019-2021 but I'm sure more will be affected down the line.  There are two of them behind the RF wheel area, and they can cause some havoc.  Power steering intermittently dropping out is the biggest one.

Tailgate.  I still think the push button power release should have always had a mechanical handle as a fail safe when the button goes ape (like most all of them do or will do).

I think if was ever to buy a newer truck. A low option turbo max would be it. A regular cab turbo max would be considered.

'16 5.3 8 speed with max tow SLT

'21 3.0 10 speed Denali (all 3.0's re 10 speed)

Convince myself I want the new interior and dash, so

'23 3.0 10 speed Denali

All were crewcab standard box (6.5 ft) 4wd and on 20's

Detest the console shifter ('21 and '23)

Huge fan of the 10 speed transmission with the 3.0

Ordered the T1's with HUD and adaptive cruise -- they've be added to my must have list.

Adaptive cruise I make extensive use of cruise -- I often do speed changes using cruise buttons on the steering -- adaptive cruise reduces the amount that I need to intervene.

I rarely run in heavy freeway traffic - but often and switch to no cruise or regular cruise if I do run in those conditions

All 3 had the Intellibeam system for headlights -- I can take it or leave it.

'23 has rainsense wipers -- less fussing that with intermittent wipers -- I can take it or leave it

I've not had brake issues on any of them -- but not usually hard on brakes anyway.

I'm doing the same job with the 3.0's as I did with the 16  5.3.

I log every fuel fill and do hand calcs to compare with tripmeter numbers.

The 16 got 20 (it had tow mirrors)

The 21 got 26.something over the 36,000 miles I had it. (it had tow mirrors)

The 23 is 29.6 aver the 19,000 miles it's gone so far (no tow mirrors)

I'm was always a tow mirror fan.

The bigger tow mirrors on the T1's have created a bigger blind spot on the passenger side.  This blindspot the passenger side A pillar and the wider mirror. It is problematic when checking to the rhs at corners

Getting away from these mirrors is another reason for the '23 instead of the '21.

Everything newdude said is spot on.  I will just reiterate a summary of my experience.

I came from a 2017 5.3L High Country to a 2024 LTZ.  I personally prefer the looks of the previous generation truck but bought a new one anyway. I honestly don't care for the bowtie being moved up on the refresh truck.

My biggest likes although taking a while to get used to is the interior of the 2024 with the technology package.  As mentioned the infotainment center has glitches but have finally found some settings in Android auto that seem to help that. The electronic shifter is odd and not sure it makes sense but I like it. I think its a matter of getting it to be a memory automatic thing.  Strange pushing forward to backup.

The truck feels big driving it. I felt I had better visibility when backing out of the garage seeing the sides on the 2017. It felt more nimble to maneuver around.

The 2024 is tall and the box sides and tailgate are higher than I would like. Getting in the back of truck is a challenge.  If I could economically drop the truck 4" I would. I am going to drop the rear 1 1/2" using replacement shackles. Hoping that is enough.

Currently my mpg is less with the 5.3 10 speed than it was with he 5.3  8 speed. Hoping it will get better as I break it in.

Its quiet and rides well. I was expecting to lose ride when I went from my 2017 with 20" Michelins to the 2024 with 22's with cheaper tires.  But feels similar.

I find the dash and turn signal stock less visible on the 2024 with where the tilt feels comfortable but having a heads up display makes up for it as I rarely look at the actual dash.

The 2024 is certainly more car like than the 2017 High Country inside.

Also mentioned above its annoying and expensive you are going to have to pay for a data plan to make everything work.  I love having the posted speed limit sign below my speed limit on the HUD but that stops working in a month unless you subscribe to a minimal onstar plan.

No 12v accessory plug on the new ones so that's an issue for those of us that have "cigarette lighter" plug accessories.

More good information, thanks.

Sounds like in-dash nav won’t work without data?  Is Carplay still an option?

Yes the current T1s still have Apple Carplay/Android Auto.

2024s you have to pay for the integrated google maps, 2025 it will be included.

I traded my 16 crew cab z71 for a 24. The 24 so far seems to be the best of the 4 Silverados I've had. It definitely moves out better stock than the 16 did. Both were 5.3's.

Had not heard that. I think that's great, but they should just drop it for everyone. Why have a bastard year of trucks where you have to pay.

Appreciate the info.

Real question is do you want pay-as-you-go or pay it all up front.

Might depend, in part, how long you usually keep a truck

My previous work truck was a 2015 Silverado 1500 WT, reg cab, long box. I put about 100,000 miles on that truck, when I was upgraded to a 2022 Silverado LTD Custom Crew cab. I prefer the 2022.

In my case I just bought as much data as I could with my GM rewards.  Whatever I did was $25 a month but I think I have seen people post that they are on some $15 a month plan. That would be easier to swallow.
