In 2024, GM Authority exclusively brought you the first details about GM’s next-generation full-size half-ton pickup trucks – the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. Now, our spies have just caught the very first prototype of what we believe is the 2027 Chevy Silverado.

While the heavy camo on this truck makes it difficult to figure out whether this is a Chevy or GMC, we have our reasons to to call this a Silverado (and not a Sierra). In any event, what we see here is the Crew Cab, Short Box configuration. The upright front end features a set of placeholder (non-production) headlamps bookending a grille with at least four horizontal slats and a front-facing camera peeking out from behind the cutout in the camo. Note that the headlamps are mounted quite a bit lower within the front fascia than those on the current Silverado 1500...

I'm very curious about the new V8 engines they are coming out with. Nice to see some spy shots, that just means there will start to be more pictures floating around as we come to the end of winter and into more summer testing.

Kinda stinks that the majority of the truck will be the same. The cab and bed will be basically the same, just the front end, interior and engines will be all new.

I'm sure cab and bed will get new sheet metal, what more would you want?

Article says the basic platform (chassis) will be unchanged.  I guess that means for better or worse another generation of waxy goo covered frames.  It appears so in the pictures.

If they get the fender lips tighter around the wheels with that shape as in the photos, the trucks will look a lot better.

I'll bet that truck is a GMC judging by the grille texture.

Well, the diesel lives *unless* those cooling inlets in the exhaust tips are on a gas truck which means we get gas particulate filters on the V8s.  You can see the cooling cuff/venturis on the pass. pipe that is visible where I circled in the picture below.  Same style that the 3.0 Duramax currently uses.

Looks like all the sheet metal is new.  Rear bumper is similar in general appearance but its clearly different.  So lots of new on the existing or slightly modified T1 frame (T1-2 or T1.2).

Looking forward to a unibody truck?

The rumor is the 1500 lineup will be as follows.

2.7L turbomax (new designation)

3.0 Baby Duramax (unchanged)

5.7L gas engine (no other details)

6.6L (unknown designation)

The 5.3 and the 6,2 are gone.

The 5.7 and 6.6 will have all of the AFM/DFM garbage no one wants

These trucks are already on the road doing validation. (obviously by the pic)

They will include an all new (to the trucks) electrical architecture.

The 2027 HD's are going to be a mid cycle mechanical refresh only with very minor body changes (if any) maybe some trims adds or subtracts but mostly focused on the new 6.6 gas L8S and the new Duramax L6P 8.3L

both with added emissions equipment including a large EGR for the gasser.

I am waiting on the 2026HD to come available for order and hopefully will order a L5P

Interesting that they are going back to a '350' engine. When the 5.3 came out I was puzzled as to the reduction in displacement.

Interesting, I haven't heard any rumors or information about the displacement changes on the 5.3 and 6.2; along with nothing new about the 8.3 diesel.

I wonder if the 6.6 currently in the HDs will be moving down to the light duty, which would be odd because all the tuning and engineering done on that engine was not done for the light duty consumer.

Couple things.  Trucks are already on GM Global B/VIP.  Global B just came out in 2020, and hit trucks 2022.5.  And the new infotainments are already out starting 2024/2025.  So is this another all new platform?  Global A was around 2007-2020 or so, so I'd figure Global B has quite some time left.

Displacement larger (if true) sounds like an emissions move.  Bigger to make more power up front but then also can be not run near its limits?

HD.  Not sure what to think there.  2024 was MCE already, I feel like its a bit more than another MCE for it for 2027.

I didnt get into the weeds on the platform since its so complex. My understanding was that it was a big change and I left it at that. Apparently there were some software issues that were troublesome and that was part of it. (this is on the 1500s only)

Youre right on the money as far as displacement and emissions. Rumblings are that the 8.3 in the HD is a beast but in order to get it compliant it will be tuned very conservatively. That seems to be true across all truck powerplants.

The HD is mostly a powertrain/emissions refresh with some other ancillary changes. The 8.3 requires some fitment changes body wise also. Those trucks are just now being hand built for validation.

I would be willing to wager if a 6.6L is made available in the 1500's it would be an aluminum block engine similar to the current 6.2L, not an iron block derivitive of the L8T.

I wonder if the 8.3L Duramax would have some commercial applications beyond GM trucks.

What motors are in the trucks built thru the Navistar joint venture? Are they common on both brands or do the Navistar trucks use 'their' drivetrain?

    • HD at the moment, are kinda their own deal.  How LTZ sells on those vs on 1500, there is a difference.   They are merging most of the mid trims on 1500.  LT, RST and LTZ are replaced by one trim, Silverado.  LT and RST are a BIG portion of sales.    Bad naming choice aside, the new Silverado trim will offer the spread of options that those three trims offered.  So expect to see things like the tech package for example, and memory seats.  And LT Trail Boss will now just be "Trail Boss" (formerly LT Trail Boss) but will offer content spread like the new Silverado trim will.  The press photos showed the Trail Boss (formerly LT Trail Boss) has access to Super Cruise now, which on the current truck was High Country only.       Here is the Trail Boss interior.  Memory seats and Super Cruise are present.  All things the LT Trail Boss it replaces, and the RST it was based on didn't get on the current gen.  You had to go to LTZ or ZR2 for memory seats, and High Country for Super Cruise.
    • I installed a Hellwig rear sway bar on my 21 Sierra SLT, it made a huge difference on how the truck handles, no body roll, the trucks much more planted now. Not sure of the suspension differences between the 21 and 26,  if its body roll your having a sway bar will solve it.
    • So a follow up and my fix. I found in online searches the live data to look at on a scan tool to verify the fuel tank pressure sensor was working.  It showed an spec number towards the lower end of the rang, but in spec.  Then while it was running opened the gas cap and the pressure should change.  It didn't change even a tiny bit.  The data for the purge valve said it was open...never changed. So then I measured the voltages on the plug for the fuel pressure sensor and they matched what it should be.  So local car quest parts had the sensor in stock...it was a bit of a pain to remove and an even bigger one to get it to actually go back in.  It helped to unbolt the driveshaft and bungie cord away from the gas tank to give a bit more room to work. So fuel tank pressure sensor in I cleared the code, and started it up.  I went to the scan tool's live data and... Eureka! The pressure number was different and fluctuated a bit.  So took it on a short drive and pressure number varied saw the purge valve go from closed to open and back to closed.  Drove it to and from work for roughly a week plugged in the scan tool no codes.  I took it in to get tested and passed.  In my state's infinite wisdom (oops meant greed), since I pushed the test with the maximum extensions I have to take it back in by Feb '27 to 'get it back up to date', then my next test won't be until Feb '29.
    • Any grease on the stud threads of any kind?   Wheel studs should have NOTHING on them for proper torquing and so the nuts don't back off.     Are all of the mating surfaces clean?  So wheel, rotor and hub?     We've had plenty of trucks at work with that wheel, this is a first to me.  Makes me think they've got a lube tech putting anti-seize on all the wheel studs or some kind of grease, and they need to stop doing that.  To have 11 other trucks with the same exact problem.
    • I was a Chevy guy for years, then switched to GMC because I liked the looks better.  I'm actually thinking I like the Chevy looks better than GMC for the first time in a lot of years.   One thing I know for certain, the new GMC dash is hideous!  Chevy wins this one!
