Black Boxes

This should probably go in off topic, but I know a lot of members in this forum have chimed in about them. There is debate going on now in the courts in CT about the data from these boxes and how it is used. The were initially installed by GM to find out why the air bags deployed. Now they are using the data to prosecute drivers and to sue people in civil court. According to the law they are supposed to get a warrant to take the boxes but are taking them without one. Interesting to see if this expands.

I'm all for using the black box to prosecute the guilty.

In cases like these, only the guilty should be afraid/against using it.

More people need to be held accountable for their actions, lack of that is one of the number one problems today.

I know our bureau guys pulled one out of a Regal or Century that was involved in a wreck that ended up being a fatal. Not sure what ultimately ended up with the case. The kid rear-ended a few cars then took off on foot only to turn himself in later.

Unplug it.

Unpluging it will set codes and airbags wont work. There are liability issues, insurance Co/fraud, lawsuits from injured passengers.

Its not worth it.

If I had one, and if I unplugged it, I would be more concerned about the light on the dash, rather than the lawsuits and airbag not functioning. I hate frivilous (SP) law suits and I'm not particulartly fond of a pillow being hurled at my face at zillions of miles per hour... Plus I'm honest enough to own up to my mistakes. What has the world come to when we need black boxes to tell who's at fault in accidents. In reality I doubt that they will be much of an issue unless a fatality is involved.

Lack of responsiblity is part of the downfall of our society.

I wouldn't worry so much about the black box, anyone can find you at any time. Thru Onstar or your cell phone. Gotta love GPS!

If you dont inform your insurance you are committing fraud and the insurance companys take a dim view of that. Getting insurance after them finding out is going to be expensive.

To me it is just one more invasion of my privacy. Even if it was only used to investigate fatal accidents, it is a piece of electronic junk. I would not want my fate decided by a cheap made in china circuit board.

I second that. Next thing you know, they will put cameras in our homes to see what we do with our spare time or what we watch on tv. Its Police Investigators jobs to figure out what happened at accident scenes. And for the most part, they figure it out very accurately. You do not need a little black box to tell you that. And before some of you chime in that I must be guilty since I am against it....yes I speed. So does most of society. Stupidity kills, not speed.

I third that, the way I see it, is my vehicle is my property, therefore, I can do what I want and remove whatever I want, especially stuff that can A. go wrong and B someone else can know where I am and what Im doing. Though onstar I admit has many advantages, I would not want it and the black box is just plain BS! Just somethin for those sue happy idiots that inhabit our country. d**n Commies!

I agree.

If I paid for the truck, and to keep insurance on it, I'll do with it what I want.

BTW I disconnected the Air Bags in my truck, because of the large amounts of deer accidents.

A little black tape on the Instrument Cluster hides the light completely.

Seat belts have saved thousands of lives, so I am not worried about not having air bags.

There is too much outside involvement in our lives, and this is a way we fight back.

If you disconected the airbags and arent plannin on sellin the truck anytime soon, Id sell those bad boys! You could make some nice dollars there! Speaking of airbags, Im goin to have to take mine out to do toy with the steering column, not lookin foreward to that.
