Installing manual hubs

Greetings,

 

Another newbie! I have had 4 X 4's in the past...and just recently purchased a 1995 Silverado 1500 with a 5.7 engine and automatic transmission. Is there a manual locking hub system I can install on the Silverado 1500?

No. The hubs on (if I recall correctly) 88+ trucks do not have lockouts. They're splined for the front half shafts because they're independant front suspension trucks. Basically when you put it in 4 wheel drive, you engage the transfer case and the front differential. The front axle shafts are always turning.

Figures...what became of the good old Dana 60's? I have learned that the '95 has actuator shafts/splines. These must be what you mentioned...

Dana 60's went out with the solid front axle because people wanted smoother riding trucks. Because they're wimps and want their trucks to ride like cars, not trucks.

Suppose installing front leaf springs and a REAL axle would be too much...

 

Guess I will need to look at pre-1988's to get that...

Naw, you can install leaf springs and a SFA. I'm sure people on here have done it, I know people do it to s-trucks all the time. Hell there's a guy down the road from me that took a 1-ton and put a SFA under it. But yeah, you'd probably need to look for something pre-88 to get the parts for it.

I think OP was actually looking for locking hub kits. I have not found any myself, and would think they would be a viable product for anyone that wants to disconnect the entire front drive assy when in 2wd. Locking hubs install on the front hub, and basically spline the front axle to the wheel hub. When not connected, the wheel is not connected to the axle, and will free wheel, creating less drag on the driveline and increasing mileage in 2wd. The only drawback is they require you to get out and turn the actuator on the end of the axle, sticking out of the front hub caps.
