Traveling to Mexico in May, would you still go?

no, there are other places id rather go- violence or not.

two years ago went to the bahamas for my friends wedding. was great.

went to italy for my honeymoon last year for two weeks. was amazing.

going to london, austria, and germany this year during octoberfest. will be awesome.

why go someplace that you cant enjoy? im not one who would want to go to another country just be stuck in a resort for a week- you can do that in the states. part of the allure of traveling to other places is to experience that country- the people, the food, the culture, the history, etc.

Its lucky no one was killed . My sis almost had her finger bit off in south Africa when she was robbed in there gated community they where living in (her husband was building a golf course down there) . When I was in mexico two times I did not feel safe off the resorts. I felt like I could be stab for 20 bucks and not really anyone would care.

ah, i see. interesting.

i cant speak for the other countries, but in italy we didnt have any problems nor did the other people on the tour (we did a cross country tour with 50 other people). me and my wife walked around many places in italy (either by ourselves or in the group)- we hit rome, venice, florence, tuscany, pisa, verona, vatican city, sorrento, capri, etc. and never had an issue. now we didnt go walking through the ghettos of italy at night, but we werent always in the main tourist areas either. you have always have to watch for pickpockets though, especially in rome (and they get real creative about it too), but thats really as bad as it gets. thats not to say there isnt a threat, because there is, but if your smart and use some common sense there isnt much to worry about. not much different than walking around NYC or something.

the bahamas wasnt that great though- you definitely had that "feeling" i guess you could say. you dont want to be walking too far off the resort down there, but, that doesnt mean you cant do anything. in the resort you have a tourist info desk which sets you up with excursions through the resort so you know they are legitimate. you can tell driving through the country (like when we went snorkeling, which was on the other side of the island) that it is a poor country.

Dude I've taken my entire family to Cancun and Rocky Point and Puerto Vallarta. Tourist places like that is life support for Mexico and the people in charge know it. The two main things that keep Mexico afloat are drugs and tourist hot spots, both controlled by drug cartels. It is considered a big no-no to bring the conflict between cartels into these areas. If it is done then someone will be held accountable. So, take your wife enjoy Cancun because these places are about as safe as it gets in Mexico. Lived in L.A. California and Tucson, Az and had numerous vacations to Mexico and had no problems.

I prefer Jamaica , We stayed at a Sandals resort there, it was a great time. All inclusive and no tipping allowed.

if it gets my wife out of domestic cell phone range, away from facebook and work, yes! when i go to the beach, i'm there to relax. we take plenty of other trips where we like to see the sites and do a bunch of activities.

I've been to cancun 3 times in the past 6 years. Very great vacation everytime. Always felt safe, but a little common sense goes a long way. Go, you won't regret it.

And yes like others were saying you can baragain almost anything down, never pay full price.

I agree. Some folks do this and love it. They just stay at a resort in a foreign country. I don't get it. But as I stated, some love it.

When I travel abroad I want to walk around the city and view the culture. Also an occaisional tour to see the "ruins" or whatever sights are interesting.

But I do understand those that just wish to travel to a resort. Some are all inclusive. Buffet meals and such. Just a good time to relax and enjoy the sun and warm weather.

A note about the water. Do your best to drink only bottled water. Take caution with any drinks that have ice cubes. Most good hotels will filter their water. But no one knows how ofter the filter is changed.

Also if you dont want to burn in a short period of time and want to be out side . Go to one of those tanning booths like 3 times and then when you get there make sure you are wearing the sun screen . Ive been in mexico before and you can burn fast even with sun screen in like 4 hours easy if you dont have already a tan . and 4 hours can go by fast .

agreed, i had what looked like 3rd degree burns on my back from being out in the sun for too long there. it blistered and burned like hell! i couldn't sleep on my back for a week! and i wore waterproof SPF 30 the whole time. this year i'm taking some bullfrog SPF 50 or higher!!!

too many free mojitos and losing track of time can be a good idea, as long as you balance the sun and shade
