Which truck is this? I only ask because I thought they did away with EGR valves for all trucks years ago...

All new diesels have them now as far as I know. Ask a Ford owner how much that little device's cooler (among the other engine-killing emission devices) cost them in their 6.4 or 6.7 Powerstroke ... :noway: Chernobyl part II !

No doubt, I know that GM did away with them on the gas engines and I just assumed they did on the diesels as well...that's what I get for assuming. I know I wouldn't mind getting rid of it on my truck.

Emission crap all seems to do more harm than good. Harm to your wallet, mostly ...

The quote from the shop where my truck is currently at just quoted me at $1,400 for a diferrential rebuild.

They say they can't find a used differential or entire rear end with decent (low) mileage so it's going to be new internals.

Thoughts?

Yup, "Gobal Warming" is how AL Gore can afford his own private jet.

What is their "rebuild"?

You can buy a new one for cheaper than that I think. Or a junkyard axle.

That's exactly what I'm going to ask them about, I need to know what parts are required. Rebuild kits online are around $200 including shipping costs.

And they said labor would be around $320 if I provided the parts.

That's a total bargain up here. There's only one driveline shop in all of MA that I know of that specializes in differentials and driveshafts on any wheeled equipment on the planet. A complete rear axle overhaul (new everything except the tubes & pumpkin) is $2k. When they build it, it will outlast the vehicle. Been going to these guys since I was a teenager (Mitchell Drivetrain) - used to ride dirt bikes with the owner when I was a kid. They're the best of the best at what they do.

They did u-joints and balanced our '86 Grand Marquis' driveshaft back in '03 or '04 - almost 200k miles ago. Greaseable joints, of course. Still smooth as glass at any speed. Should be good for another decade, at a minimum.

I remember when I moved to Phoenix, it was tough finding a place that specialized in that sort of work. I did end up finding one, but unfortunately that's long since been erased from the memory banks by hundreds of thousands of gallons of whiskey, rum, gin, & beer ... :happysad:

I'll dig around in my "El Camino receipt jar" - maybe I still have the receipt from the place in Phoenix that did my 'Camino driveshaft. They did a great job - thing was trashed when I brought it to them. Previous owner went over 13k miles without a single needle bearing in any of the caps, LOL!!

Well I'll be a SOB - I actually found it. Wow ... can't believe that was 16 years ago. That went by in a blink ... :noway:

Disregard the stupid "Paint 2" watermark that got forced in there electronically. Friggin computers, I'll tell ya! :banghead:

Someone saay Chernobyl? Everyone needs to watch "Pandora's promise" on Netflix. Anti Nuke people who made a movie about nuclear power, and did a 180 in the process. Very fascinating docu. Like how downtown Paris is more radioactive than the shores of fukishima, and how some people have lived right IN the Chernobyl forbidden zone since then, how few people actually died from it, how new designs are much much cleaner than solar or wind power, etc.

Funny - I was just discussing this topic with someone on the net a couple days ago. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are prime examples - the cities are flourishing 70 years later, with millions living on top of the debris / fallout.

A few months ago I was on Google Maps checking out the site after watching a few Youtube documentaries on the incident. Fascinating.

I took the truck for a ride to bed the new brake pads. Went by my future in law's with the Fiancé so she could get her mail, and when I pulled in my ABS kicked in and the light came on in the dash. Got out, and checked things over but I didn't find anything wrong. Drove home.

It was only doing it when I had the wheels turned all the way to the left. So I looked it over again at home. The braided line on the drivers side was a little loose where it bolts to the caliper. I could hear it hissing when I put my socket on it, and it had some fluid laying around it. Tightened it up, and so far so good.

I got more quotes and the average was around $1,300 plus whatever the tow truck would cost to move it across town.

Soo the shop in Phoenix went down to $1,300 for a full differential rebuild and i agreed. Turnaround time is up to four days.

Just one differential or both?
