Yeah, saw that awhile back. Kinda lame, just like the push button starts.

That's a Fiat move right there. Yuck!

Not a fan of Dodge (Ram) or of the shift knob, but I do have to admit the idea of the Hemi with an 8-speed does have an appealing side, crazy looking knob withstanding......

They had do- the ZF 8-speed has no mechanical linkage to accommodate a normal shifter sadly.

What happens if the knob falls off?

Call a wrecker.

Thankfully the 8-speed is a ZF unit and seems quite good. It's used in all manner of fancy German stuff, Jags and even Bentley uses it.

I'm pretty sure the 8 speed RAM I looked at had a floor shifter - but I wasn't buying I was just wandering around while the Jeep was inspected.

I would rather have that dial shifter than some BS console shifter for sure.

Always keep a pair of needle nose pliers at all times when driving the truck.

Don't worry sooner or later the steering wheel will be gone and a joy stick will be on the console.

I would be ok with a John Deere style shifter, just because I'm used to them.

Saab tried that, it failed miserably.

My grandmothers 1964 Belvedere had the pushbutton trans shifter on the dash...way cooler than a twisty knob.

All 8 speed Rams are knob only. There is a reverse/park lock out while the vehicle is in motion in case one gets confused when reaching for radio/hvac controls.

As far as it being a issue of breaking, whether it is a column, console, or knob, I though all brands were more electronic than mechanical to actually shift between the gears?

Chevy will offer the 8 speed as a '16 model I'm thinking. Similar to when they brought in the 6 speeds for '09 following the '07 900 release.

I just wish GM would offer some decent rear end options like Ford, Ram, and YoYo does with their 6 speeds. 3.42 in my '11 will not hold a gear pulling a trailer with 6th locked out(5th in tow haul). Ridiculous.
