So, has anyone added a catch can on older trucks (2000-2006)? This looks like something you could add without any issues but will the older trucks need the extra capacity of the Mike Norris catch can or would the smaller Jegs catch can work just fine? Thinking about putting one on my 2002 Yukon XL 6.0L and I typically run 5000 miles between oil changes, no known issues with the PCV system or using excessive oil on mine. Just wondering about the advantages of adding a catch can to an IDI engine or how much oil one may expect from this vintage engine.

They are needed on all engines.

I've been wondering what would happen if you just deleted the PCV hose to the intake and installed old-school valve cover breathers somehow? Would that work? Has anybody tried it on an LS motor? If it works, why in the heck doesn't somebody market LS valvecovers with built in ports for K&N style breather filters so we can forget catch cans and pcv hoses and all of that other junk?

Ahh .. now I know why I have intermittently high oil consumption! Now I know where it's all going.

 

When I push my truck hard - say a 6k lb. load trying to maintain 70mph on a hilly interstate, like 91 North through VT, I'll use almost a quart in 300 miles. On a recent cross-country trip, I used a quart in 6,200 miles. Right now I'm at about 7,500 (since last oil change) miles and have used a half quart or so since last oil change (going easy on it).

 

Gonna order me up one of those CP units with the glass bowl. :smoker:

Wow, I towed a camper to Maine and back, and didn't use enough to register differently on the dipstick. Every one of these engines is different.

On that trip up 91, I left the cruise control on ... which is just ridiculous on that road. On every single hill it would downshift to second gear and scream over 5k rpm. Since that trip I no longer use the cruise. If I shut the cruise off on every hill, the oil consumption is not even detectable. The following week I hauled another car up that way not using cruise at all, and the dipstick level didn't move a millimeter.

 

You'd think with all the computer crap they put in these things, that they'd design a SMART cruise control. This one is THE worst I have ever seen. It tries so hard to maintain the speed that it will grenade your engine to do so. That's fine on flat ground, but on hills just let the thing lose 10mph -it's not the end of the world! I'd rather that than a case of oil per week ...

 

There should be a different cruise map for tow/haul mode. But what do I know - I'm just a consumer/mechanic ....

Do you have proof of this? If not, it's libel.

Running at high RPM isn't going to blow an engine. These engines like to rev. Let them.
