I dunno what to tell ya there. I have a 4.3 4x4. I get about 15 around town IF I run auto 4x4. 17-20 if I put it in 2wd.

Posted

No mods and always in 2wd. Not dogging it either. Haven't towed anything yet. The truck is only a month old so I'm still babying it for now. On the highway I set the cruise control at 65 mph. I bumped up the tire pressure from the factory 35 to 40 psi cold to see if that might help slightly.

For what it's worth, it is still winter. Is it really cold where you are? You'll always see dips with cold weather..but my new 5.3 really is impacted by cold. On cold days I get 16.5 to 18.5....the last warm up we had I got over 20 easily. That to me is a huge swing in MPG due to temp.

I haven't really monitored how the cold effects the tunes yet, but it's obvious that it does, I get excellent MPG when it's 40+ but when it gets in the teens I would venture to say that I'm down 25% on mileage.

I have 4500 on my 5.3 and if I drive freeway I get great mileage but in town it's all stop and go and all one to two mile trips I can get as low as 9.8mpg

Short trips dont allow the motor to warm up to peak efficiency. And in stop and go, low mpg is to be expected. You cant take an average from a 1-2 mile trip. Its more accurate over several hundred miles.

Sorry guys. Guess I should have proof read my post. I meant I'm only getting 15 MPG.

Even if its only 15 mpg. there are more factors at play here. winter blend gas. cold temps. new engine break in.

How are you calculating? best way to do it is clear your trip meter on each fill up. then see how many miles you drive on the tank and divide by the number of gallons you put in. The DIC will sometimes be 1-2mpg off for the worse or the better.

I calculate by using the trip and a full tank. The DIC is always roughly 2 MPG or so more than the math shows. I know there's a lot of vairables for fuel milage, I'm just curious if everyone else with the 6 cylinder is getting around the same as me. I hate to drop it off at the dealer for something like fuel milage. Seems like most people went with the 5.3. I'm starting to wish I had.

Here in Michigan it's crazy temp swings. .. 20 one day 45 the next... And my mileage changes with the temp. ..I own a bipolar Sierra.

Had to chime in on temp swings. Lol not to bash ya but we had 70 degrees the other day and snow within 24 hours. Thats an Indiana temp swing lol. It will effect fuel milage for sure.

Same here, same roads same conditions. It ridiculous! I wonder if a flashscan tune could fix this if Gm can't? A friend has a 2013 and it acts the same way, just not as extreme swings.

Just funny how GM hasn't said anything on this matter yet. I looked my truck up there was a problem with AFM before it left factory. website TIS2WEB input VIN# and show all the recalls and update before and after it was. built.

I have the v6 and am getting really good mileage. The lowest I have gotten is in the 17's and the highest has been in the 20's. I think I'm averaging 18.3 or 18.4. No complaints on my side about mpg.

I have the 5.3 4x4 and surprisingly I get better mileage if I stay in the 40~50 mph range than anything above or below. I am thinking at higher speeds its the brick like aerodynamics and below 30 it doesn't seem to drop into V4 mode. So far the best I see is mid 22's at these slower speeds which is fine since I did not buy this as a daily driver.

I have a big issue that has popped up. I just filled up with E85 and after running about 100 miles the mpg looks dismal. I will not know for sure until I run a few tanks through. The issue and I guess you could say bright side is that this 5.3 engine loves the E85 you have to really be careful with the gas pedal as people will be staring at you because the rear tires are spinning on the slightest take off. you must gain over 50 HP with this alcohol fuel.
