The only thing I didn't like about the Saikou Michi is that it is a completely sealed can...I'm one for taking things apart and cleaning. My biggest concern with a sealed can is winter...I swabbed out jello from my jegs unit, and was lucky enough that in unscrewed. That stuff would not have drained from a petcock.

 

I've pretty much set upon the CP can, and maybe even the aluminum body...still like to see what's going on in there. I guess my reasoning is that I have the Jegs, I see how it works and how well it works, and the CP is a very similar design (just larger).

 

No worries, I always drain after the trucks been driving at full operating temp for a while to avoid anything like that.

Did you buy a stock can with the 1/2" barbs or did you have the custom make one with 3/8"?

Yea, I think the final model is complete. He just drafted up an adjustable leg for the bottom support on the can last week so I think after I toss that on, update the product overview - it's good to go.

I don't think so because of the ratio of oil versus water. I'm getting approximately 2 oz of oil and and 4 oz of water. It's hard to tell the exact difference because of the moisture content but that's close enough. So based on the oil quantity, I don't think there's anything wrong. Being that it's mostly moisture in the drained fluid, that's pretty typical for an engine in the winter time to have a lot of moisture like that. It should settle back down to just oil in the summer. If it doesn't settle back down or if it were more than 2 oz of oil, I would definitely be concerned though.

I plan on getting an inline check valve. What's the value of having baffles in the can?

It's a necessity. It gives the oil vapor something to condense and adhere too. Without the baffles, it's just an empty can that does not do a sufficient job of filtering out all the oil.

I too have gotten a lot of water / oil from my RX can during this past winter. As stated in a previous post, I got nearly 10.5 oz of 50% water vs oil after 1000 miles. I completely agree with your findings. In fact yesterday, I was able to wash the truck and I drained the cc again after about 250 miles. I got about 2 ounces of 50 / 50 water to oil mix.

 

During the summer, I collected nothing but oil. It is weather dependent in my opinion. I think your engine is fine, it's just the extreme cold we've experienced that has added to the gunk we've collected.

Yeah it's definitely the colder weather. I also drain after driving the truck for a while to make sure all of the oil and water is warm so it flows and isn't frozen or coagulated in any way.

 

And just to clarify again for anyone that may have misunderstood me, my original point a few posts back wasn't to knock any particular brand of catch can. I was merely trying to state that I don't see any way you could ever go 5,000 miles between drains in a cold weather climate.

Well, pulled the trigger on the Conceptual Polymer can, with the aluminum body and HE filter...I really wanted the glass body, but the aluminum version just removes the potential for me to drop and break the glass body. The aluminum version also provides about double the capacity of the glass version, something like 5 ounces or so.

 

Because I have the second battery and hydroboost, I need to build a bracket from the fender to the engine compartment, with a knee brace from the second battery tray. Should take an hour or so to build, since it will need bending, welding, and drilling. But I need to wait for the CP to arrive so I can make my measurements...probably install next week.

 

One thing I was thinking the other night is our use of high grade synthetics...in my previous trucks (colder running diesel), you could literally run synthetic through the combustion process (some guys ran their drain oil through the fuel system) and catch it dripping out the tailpipe because it has such a high temperature tolerance. I'm sure synthetics in the gasser get smoked in the cat, but at what cost?

 

I also took note last night that someone indicated their tailpipe wasn't nearly as black as it was prior to the installation of the catch can, I looked today and mine isn't as sooty as it was previously either...maybe? If it was from un-burnt fuel, should be worse since we are running the rich cycle longer due to the cold weather?

I think I bought the same CC as pictured where did u mount it can't really tell how and where u mounted it also which hose went where? Thanks

ill take better pics tomorrow. But the top line goes to the bottom fitting by the throttle body and the center one goes to the rear fitting on the manifold.

Hmmm is that a 2014 5.3? I thought hoses connected half way down engine drivers side and under throttle body?

You are correct. That would be a 6.2 motor.

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
