Whine when engine is cold

Well my new 2014 AT has been added to the list of problem trucks... The day I picked it up I noticed that there was a whine coming from the engine, being an excited new owner I told myself it must be breaking in, ya right... Anyway, fast forward to this past Monday, at just over 2,000 miles I dropped it off at the dealer to have them look into the whining noise which had not gone away. Its going on day three and they haven't found the cause yet. All they know so far is that it is in the engine so today they are digging in they tell me. They ran the truck yesterday with the belt off to try to isolate thee issue and found that the noise continued and did not change.

Fingers crossed.

Anyone else getting a whining noise when first started for the day? Sounds like a Ford's power steering pump.

Mine does it also. I don't reply worry about it. I figured it was some kind of high output fuel pump for the direct injection. That's probably not what it is but it makes me feel better. My truck has 11,000 miles now and has done it since day 1.

Haven't noticed anything on mine. The motor is kind of "noisy" but its due to the Direct Injection, which is a ticking/sowing machine sound. That is normal on Direct Injection motors.

Mine makes noise too..sounds more like a knocking noise..I was told that it was the fuel pump...but from what I was told they did improve the sound a lot better from the 13 and older models..i never stood close enough to the older models to tell so I can't compare..

I'm guessing with these newer motors that are so quiet but now you can hear the fuel pump...

if you stand directly in front of the truck...you can't hear it..the motor is super quiet..but if you stand beside the truck where the fender and doors meet..you can definitely hear it.

Picked up the truck today. They confirmed with GM that it was normal and had been reported by many customers. They are finding that some trucks are louder than others. They did tell me it is the oil pump that makes the whine. The dealer also told me that GM has a policy in place for the new motor which restricts dealerships from replacing internal motor parts, so if they thought the oil pump or any other internal part was failing they would have to replace the entire motor.

Mine ticks as well but I know that is just caused by GM's first gen direct fuel injection.

Does any one have follow up on their engine noises? Mine has always been louder when its cold but this morning you can clearly hear a pulley in the front making a metal squeak every rotation. Its more annoying than anything because its brand new and sounds old haha.

Reading all these complaints convinces me without any shadow of doubt that I should get one these trucks ASAP and then start finding things wrong to complain about. :nopity:

Mine does it as well on a cold start up. It kinda sounds like an older model Ford steering pump which would always "whine". It only does it for a second or two then its gone. I guess its normal according to GM and welcome to the age of direct injection.

Have you seen the video in my pulley sounds topic? Does it sound like that? No one seems to be getting that harsh of a sound when its cold.

bladz1454,

I have watched your video, and it sounds like a wet drive belt. My Tacoma used to sound like that when it used to rain or after I would wash the engine. I will make a video of mine asap and forward it to you!!!
